Has anyone else heared that Disney is going to make a movie fro their “Wonderful world of Disney” about a F.I.R.S.T team in inner-city school in California?
i think i read about it somewhere…
Dean announced this at kickoff, and I know there is at least one person who reads these boards who could give us an update, but will he?
Mike
I read that too, and it was taking place in inner city Cali, and was going to star Noah Wyle from ER as a teacher!!
I have an open suggestion to Disney and FIRST for the movie though, not concerning story line or actors but, screening.
I think that if Disney is going to make a movie about our competition then we should get a chance o see it and critique it before it gets released to the public. I have seen a lot of newscasts and/or newspaper articles from various sources that have totally messed up the whole game or idea’s behind FIRST. Things like comparing FIRST to battlebots and totally describing the game wrong.
My suggestion to Disney would be to hold the final production till after the Championship Event in whatever year they are releasing it so we can watch the final cut they have there. Then ask us what needs to change to properly and accurately convey the message of FIRSt to the rest of the world!!!
I would happily give up a few hours of my time in Florida to watch the movie and discuss and/or comment on the film!!!
I will be repeating this message in a new post so comment there if you would like!
I have a bad feeling that “cute” guys and dramatic sceans along with cheesey plot twists and steriotipical Dinsey villians will take over and the FIRST message will be spoiled for “good” TV. Plus, how are they going to show them going to the Nat’s or a Regional? Hmmm?
If they premire it at Nats., I’m renting a limo, a gaggle of photographers, and getting all dolled up. I’ve always wanted to be a movie star … or at least go to a gala premire. Anyone w/ me?
I think they should’ve tackled battlebots. Will Wiley’s team win the National championship or the Chairman’s award or both? How the featured team does says alot about how much Disney understands FIRTST and I doubt they understand what FIRST is about.
I think Disney will use the program to tell of “problems” like all the other shows. Not only will they win every award (cus their so good) they will also get all the hot girls at school, get multi-million dollar sponsors, save the world, end hungar, catch Osam Bin Laden, topple Sadam Husain, and discover the true meaning of friends (aaawwwww).
I think I’m goin to puke…
i, too, must agree with all of you in your hopes that Disney does not go overboard with the winning. it could turn into mighty ducks, mighty ducks II and mighty ducks III all over. and who knows where that’s gonna stop. my team went to one regional this year where we were beaten in the first round of finals. at nationals we were tenth in our division after low scoring wins on saturday, however, according to our leaders (this is my first year) we did better this year than we did last. we didn’t do great, but everyone who put their heart and soul into our robot felt good about the outcome.
A MESSAGE TO DISNEY:
if you want to get to know first, talk to the average teams. the ones who are out everyday fighting for sponsorships, the ones who place tenth. my name is collin fultz, if you e-mail me i’ll be glad to let you know what first is for me. thanks.
anyways, i <3 robots
ps that’s my girlfriends
What if it truns out like Backdraft… you know were they ave the firemen doing stuff they normal wouldn’t do!! Will they do that to the robot team??? i can see it now the robot team over comes all the odd that are aganist them, and win everything and over come te “bad” robot team
bad feeling that “cute” guys and dramatic sceans along with cheesey plot twists and steriotipical Dinsey villians will take over and the FIRST message will be spoiled for “good” TV
HEY, we all know how awesome FIRST is and exciting, the the big guy slapping popcorn in his mouth in the front row doesn't! So If thoughs "directing genius's" out there could squeeze a whole season of robotic action and excitement then let him "create". Anybody who can do that diserves all the plot twistes and cute guys he can get.
P.S- DISNEY…Don’t 4get the hot girls 2!!!
I would also not like to see FIRST turned into a robotic Mighty Ducks. However, Disney has to go to someone to get some information. I’m pretty sure Dean and Woodie will push against a cheesy, miracle team movie. Also, looking at the post in the general forum, It looks like the ‘miracle’ is going to be the fact the team exists and gets the gang members back on the road to college. I would hope at least Dean and Woodie would get a say in what the movie shows about the organization.

Is to follow a random FIRST team or two and do a REAL WORLD like show documenting what they have to go through to get to the competition. The best way to understand FIRST is through people who really do understand FIRST!

Great idea, ed. Then again, what’s so wrong with a made for tv movie? Why not both? I am in favor of anything that gets FIRST more recognized. If there is one less person in the world who will look at me like i’m crazy when i say i do robotics, i am happy.
i feel ya there. Maybe a made for TV movie with cute guys, hot chicks and a miracle team would enitce some schools out there to consider a team. once they are in, they will understand what FIRST is all about. i know i do.
yeah i guess it would be interesting to see some hot MTV chick in a thong, bent over a robot trying to figure out how to use an allen wrench, an at the same time complaining about how “kent is soooo impulsive with the hammer drill, i like can’t, like stand him? like!?”
FIRST is WAY too smart for MTV to understand. It would just bore them. TLC or A&E(who did a FIRST special for the previous years competition with Terry Bradshaw, we have it on tape) would be a better fit.

AGREED, but u know i have no problem getting it in TLC. After-all, maybe they will get that chick from “TRADING PLACES” to do it!
BUT STILL, i still love MTV or MTV2. I think that Dire Straits put it best “I want my MTV!”

Dude, ROTFLMAO!!!
I believe there are quite a few documentaries already in place for existing FIRST teams. I know at one point this year, Discovery Channel was doing a documentary on team 449. I havn’t heard of it airing yet though. Also, things like the A&E documentary last were good publicity. I think the program itself is attracting enough documentaries on it’s own without going out of its way. A TV movie would hit a whole new audience, the kind that doesn’t watch documentaries.
I agree, with a TV Movie, some of the FIRST spirit may be cut out to fill in a cheesy plot. However, the initial allure to the program for a lot of people, sorry to say, is the robot aspect. I myself was inclined to join initially because of the robot aspect. And as long as people recognize the program and the ‘cool robots’, the movie will generate interest. I was only truly ‘enlightened’ about the objectives of FIRST after my first year on a team. Generating a pool of potential FIRSTies is step one in greatly expanding the program.

i can only see good coming from the production of this movie
sure there is going to be some inaccuracies… but it will help make a FIRST a household term and hopefully when i mention it to someone their response wont be “huh?” anymore, but “oh i saw that on tv” i dont even care if its not a perfect explination… everybody here knows its going to be a really dramatic film, and the underdog team will ultimately win something… and there will be some high energy moments… thats the type of stuff thats going to get people interested
im sure i cant speak for everyone on this, but most schools have no clue that they even have a robotics team… and if they know it exists, they dont care, and all the awards are meaningless to them because they dont know what they mean, so it is hard for the team to get support (im just assuming many teams share this problem with us)… im sure a disney movie would bring much more attention to the teams
