For a different perspective on the teams coming to Worlds, the above link is a Google map showing the approximate home location of the FRC teams registered as of 4/20/16. Pin locations are approximate because FIRST only lists City, State, and Country information for each team.
They’re probably just in the same location, as FIRST only does it via City (i.e. if two teams are in the same city, the pin will drop on the exact same location for both)
This a side effect of only having the City name to use for geocoding. In this case, since teams 812, 1538, 2485, and 3128 are all listed as San Diego, CA, all four pins are located at the same coordinates. You can expand the CMP 2016 Teams list on the left and click on a team number to see where it is located on the map.
I think this is particularly interesting… I wonder how the geographical distribution changes from year to year, at least in the US.
Which also brings up an interesting question. Clearly with the majority of teams east of the Mississippi, and the next concentration of significance on the west coast, why are we doing 2 central US championships next year?
(And no, I’m not including the international teams here as one would expect the cost to fly to either cost would be a minor increase, if not a decrease, to the total cost of attending in the first place.)
For those who want to compare (or just love data), I made a map of all FRC teams this year, so you can eyeball and compare the distribution of teams at champs vs. all teams.
Just from a quick eyeball glance, it looks like if the same set of teams went to 2 champs next year, the Mississippi (or a line slightly east of it) would be the divide, with international teams generally going to Texas. This would save driving distance for most teams except the Illinois/Minnesota area and Mississippi/Louisiana area.
Great map…how hard would it be to symbolize based on how the teams punched their ticket (e.g. automatic bid, qualified this year, wait list)?
I think it’d be interesting to see the geographic distribution of the wait listed teams, and to see how that will change next year with the split championships.
Oh, and not to send this thread off topic, but the reason given last year for why one of the two locations wasn’t further west than Houston was that they looked, but weren’t able to find a potential host city that had the right dates open.
I like data!
Nice to see the Champ map and the map of all teams in the World and in Seattle.
My first thought is to area/color code the regions population so we can see the relationship between population density and teams. Another filter could be the location of First corporate sponsors and the third filter could be manufacturing activity. My guess is that most teams are located near cities, sponsors and manufacturing activity.
It would also be interesting to learn more about how teams are formed and sustained that exist outside of these locations.
As Bob from team 1983 mentioned, there are some errors in your data.
My team is not listed. We are on the east side of Seattle (15 miles east). Also missing are a number of teams in the Bellevue area and another team in my school district (Liberty HS).
Updated the map with the latest CMP Team List. Also, I added a small offset to the map coordinates in cases where multiple teams are listed in (and geocoded to) the same city name. This will make all teams visible on the map. Since full street addresses are not provided, the team location is still approximated to the center of the listed team city.
