Masks are not required in the George R. Brown Convention Center.
Masks are required for the FIRST World Championships…masks were not required last week in GRB for the FiT District Championship.

That’s so strange and conflicting from FIRST. I understand that FiT and FIRST for Worlds are different organizations though

World’s will have students/mentors/parents from different countries

So I wonder on this part in the link

What is considered an ‘indoor event area’? At GRB at Texas DCMP the event area didn’t begin until you were in the convention hall itself. Area the walkways outside of the hallways considered part of this for champs? They are indoors, but is that considered ‘event area’?

The last time this was updated was December 2021. hmmmmm

My post was a little confusing. GRB is not requiring you to wear a mask, FIRST is requiring you to wear a mask at GRB.

I understand that, I didn’t reply to your post I was quoting an area for an impetus to my post. But my question still stands as there is nothing that states GRB. Just ‘indoor event area’.

FIRST is being relatively quiet on this topic. Additionally, since the FIT Champs didn’t require them, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a last minute change. Just, as of now, they are necessary.

This could be possible, but If they drop the mask requirement last minute, I could see a lot of volunteers/teams pulling out.

edit: increased clarity

It was pretty clear in the volunteer orientation that masks would be required in the venue.

I am curious as those who posted earlier if in the venue means in the hallways of the building or the convention hall itself. I would make the assumption anywhere you need a badge to access you will need a mask, but beyond that it will likely be dependent on the individuals preference.

I hope everyone will use the broadest possible definition because that is the kind and gracious thing to do. They are actively protecting the most vulnerable.

At the event I’ll be wearing a mask, but hopes do not mean that others will be if it is not a requirement and the requirements are not fully defined currently IMHO which is why I am asking the question. Need to be realistic about this.

Our district approval to travel was contingent on minimum precautions such as mask requirements being in place. I highly doubt FIRST would lift that and risk teams being forced to drop by school regulations. They are already struggling to fill events, it would be shooting themselves in the foot if they lifted the requirement.

I emailed FIRST HQ because I am at elevated risk for Covid complications and my attendance hinged on whether masks would still be required indoors since the guidance had not been updated in a few months. They said that masks would be required come Champs. Whether this is everywhere or just ‘at the event’ I am unsure. But it does seem they will not be doing a last minute drop.

Some regionals/districts did drop the requirement at the last minute for their events. Did that affect any teams attendance for those?

I’d assume so, but this year Heartland dropped their mask requirement the Monday of the event.

At the Green Country Regional we weren’t told about the change until we got there and were loading our stuff in.

Got a volunteer email today for champs. It says masks are required in all indoor event areas unless actively eating or drinking.
