I’m a noob in general but I really don’t have a hang on materials, can someone tell me how to apply materials to sub objects?
-
Convert your object to an editable poly.
-
Under the Modifier panel you can select sub-objects (for example all the front polygons on a t-shirt).
-
In the Material Editor (press M) you can creat a “T-shirt front” material with a texture map.
-
There’s an icon just below the material spheres labeled “Apply to selected” (hover over it to see the title). If your polygons are still selected it will apply that material only to those polygons.
-
You can do the same for the back of the t-shirt (or whatever object you’re working on).
Hope this helps!
??? that’s what I thought I was supposed to do, I must be missing something because it’s still not working. does it only work if it has the smae title or material ID or is my computer jsut being funky?

Buddy, I’ll be honest, I have no idea what that is, I’ll look it up tomorrow because I have homework tonight. But are there any settings that need to be on to do this? I just did it by creating sub object materials and applying them through IDs, but I’m certain that’s not the only way. everytime I try applying it to selection it applies it to the whole object, not just the subobjects I have selected.
Lol, Pete wants you to look up something else that’s kind of related to sub-object materials.
I think what you’re trying to do is put certain materials on certain faces, right?
Every face on your object has a number called the Material ID. You assign different materials to different IDs. So, if you have a simple building, the walls could be set to ID 1, the windows could be ID 2, and the roof could be ID 3. You set them by selecting the polygons and finding the set material ID box somewhere in Editable Poly.
In the Material Editor, you need to make a Multi/Sub-Object material. When you do, you’ll see a list of ten different little materials inside it, each with a number next to it - its Material ID. To assign materials to the house for example, you could set the number of sub materials to 3, set the material #1 to a brick texture, set material #2 to a glass texture, and set material #3 to a shingle texture.
HTH.
mm, thanks mazin, I just figured that out, but is there anyways to do it without IDs? In the tutorials I reviewed to figure out this problem, they simply selecteed and applied the texture.
