Mecanum Police of CD

Next time you see a thread asking for help on a omni-directional or mecanum drive post. Please consider your response more carefully.

First try to provide links that actually help answer what they actually want. If you can’t. Consider not replying to the thread.

Next, after providing the help the OP asked for, if you simply can’t contain yourself…you can provide your carefully crafted opinion about the in-effectiveness of the drive system.

Just remember, I still have yet to see anyone provide a better answer to why one system works better than another from a simple objective and scientific standpoint…than 254’s Jared Russell.

We did a test of the traction of mecanum on HDPE the other day using our 2017 (Steamworks) robot (8" mecanum). I was pulling as hard as I could on a rope tied to the robot, and the wheels were not slipping a bit. I couldn’t budge the thing against the motors/traction, and I’m pretty strong. I don’t have an actual measurement of the force I was putting on it, but it was pretty impressively holding traction against pulling force on the plastic.

We have rarely had difficult in pushing matches with our mecanum drive systems. I think one year we did a little, I forget which year it was. In 2010 we performed very solid defense (even at Championships, where we would have done quite well except that our main breaker switch failed leaving us dead in a critical match; we still finished middle of the Division, not bad for our first trip to Champs). We had a little trouble on the platform in Stronghold, but that was more because we had not sized our chassis right to fit into the space between the little walls. When they had those slippery bridges (2013 or 2012, I forget), we had to slow down a bit, but we were to get on there and balance most of the time. We had a robot that year that was narrow side-to-side, and because of the mecanum drive, we could drive on and then pivot 90 degrees, allowing 3 bots to fit more easily. And those bridges were slippery.

Also, we haven’t detected much reluctance to pick our team for eliminations due to our use of mecanum. Except when our robot seriously sucks for other reasons (2011 and 2014 were both bad years for us, that had nothing to do with the drive system), we always get picked, and have been a ‘first pick’ several times with mecanum drive. Last year was our first try with WCD - it worked pretty well - but we’re considering mecanum again this year. (Or a swerve that we worked on over the summer; trying to decide if it’s “ready for prime time” or not.)
