Mental Health Awareness Month

In the fall of 2018 our school (Laurens District 55 HS, Laurens, SC) experienced several tragic losses to current and former students as a result of mental health disorders. The leaders of FRC Team 4451: ROBOTZ Garage and the LDHS Student Council formed “Laurens Un;ted” to start a conversation about mental health in our community. The “;” included in the name was inspired by the Project Semicolon movement. The semicolon was chosen because in literature a semicolon is used when an author chooses to not end a sentence. Since you are the author and the sentence is your life, you are choosing to continue your story. We had such a positive reaction to the initiative, we expanded it to include “Robotics Un;ted” and began promoting it at every event we’ve competed in since the Palmetto Regional in 2019. We hope it continues to expand, and our goal is to engineer a future where everyone believes that “YOUR STORY IS NOT OVER.” Please join us in commemorating “Mental Health Awareness Month” and we ask you to include mental health topics in your team’s safety strategy/briefs. We also have a website if your team is interested in joining us in promoting mental health awareness throughout the FIRST community. https://roboticsunited.org/ . It was exciting to be back on the grey carpet in 2022, and we look forward to 2023. Have a great summer!
