We are in desperate need of mentors for our FRC team in Waupaca Wisconsin. We were light on mentors since the beginning but have lost 4/5 of our technical mentors since the end of last season. If anyone can help out or knows someone in the area who can help, please reach out!
I’ll reach back to an old colleague in the stevens point area to see if they know any tech mentors.
How are you on the non technical mentor side?
I am not located near your area, but if guiding a team with design / mechanical and even some administrative stuff over the web suits your needs, I am up for the job.
While it won’t directly help you with a mentor problem. If you ever find a gap in your knowledge about something or just want to play on a field. The Lakeshore First robotics building in Manitowac, about an hr away from you, is open Saturdays in season for teams in need.
You might want to try making a poster or some flyers and go to Waupaca Fox Valley Technical College (Waupaca | Fox Valley Technical College) and hit all of the bulletin boards.
That would be amazing! Non technical side also needs a lot of help.
We find it challenging to stay organized and keep students on task. Over half our team graduated last year and we run most meetings with only 2 mentors so it gets challenging.
We could really use someone non technical to get us organized and help with team building/community involvement.
That’s a great idea! There are a few machine shops in the area too that I’ll stop by too. Thanks for the suggestion!
What a great resource! Thank you for the information! I’ll get this on our calendar.
Have you reached out to Waupaca Foundry? They should be large enough to have some outreach potential.
Reaching out to industry is low yield but high potential. A couple additional thoughts. It’s hard to know who to talk to in any company big enough to have multiple possible mentor candidates. I suggest contacting the HR director personally. Be prepared, review their list of jobs open and say “Hey, we are training people in those very skills”. And…ask about any recent retirees. There is no asset in the universe of Mentordom more valuable than a recently retired machinist. Good luck.
