With the final MN State Championship rankings set, I figured now would be a great time to get a conversation going about the 2022 Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) State Championship! The state is full of competitive robots this season, and the 2022 MSHSL State Championship is poised to be among the most competitive in its history. Here is a bit of data from 1918’s data visualization of Minnesota’s own Caleb Sykes’ Scouting Database. Thanks to @Caleb_Sykes and @AliciaTBay for making this possible.
The data above assumes nobody drops out of the event. I also want to recognize 2987 for being the top team that we’ll miss from States per the data used above. 2987 built an amazing robot and I’m thrilled they’ll get the opportunity to play at the World Championship in Houston!
I have only ever been to large regional events, it will be nice to experience a smaller environment. Because of the smaller amount of teams, alliance selection will be interesting to see. With there only being 4 alliances and high competition, there might be more upsets.
I enjoy continuing the season even though we didn’t qualify for worlds, looking forward to more offseason this year.
And good luck at worlds 4607!
Looks like we need to get our auto figured out to be somewhat competitive, that’s a low score right there… Welp time to try and find somewhere we can practice shooting high goal haha. Should be a fun event, I was just talking to some other people about how stacked it is this year as well.
I was playing around with making an alliance selection prediction… but I just don’t think anybody has a reasonable chance of predicting who the alliance captains will be given the level of competition and format of the tournament. Instead I’ll offer up some other predictions!
At least one of 5172, 2052, or 3630 will be on the winning alliance, and at least one of those teams will be on the second place alliance
1 or more teams with an OPR outside of the top 12 will be one of the 4 alliance captains
1816 will be on the 4th alliance
7028 and 5913 will both be 1st round picks
There will be at least 2 swerve defenders drafted
At least 2 Regional Winners will go undrafted
Exactly the same number of Greater MN teams will get drafted as metro area teams
Defense will play a huge role in Qualification matches with alliances intentionally attempting to prevent RP’s in matches where they’ve already locked up a win
It’ll be the most competitive MSHSL State Championship ever, with some really competitive teams going undrafted
You honestly can’t make much more of an exciting match from MN teams. If they could fit a 7th team in I’d love to see Binary Battalion (7028) in the mix as well, but a super strong match for both sides.
