Molded Wheel Tread Materials

For the few teams who have molded their own wheel tread, what material did you use?

I know 118 used Task 3: Urethane from Smooth-On on their drive wheels back in 2013, but haven’t been able to find any other tried and tested options.

Not sure how well it translates to FRC, but Robert Cowan of BattleBots fame has an excellent youtube channel and goes over the process of molding the wheels for his robot Copperhead.

Thanks, I’ll look into it!

Not for wheels, but 1114 used to use the brush-on series of Smooth-On products for our intake rollers in 2011, 2012, and 2014.

While we probably won’t be used molded tread wheels anytime soon, we might actually try using this stuff on our hanging hooks this year if we get the chance to modify our bot. Thanks!

So why not just give SmoothOn a call? They have some very knowledgeable and passionate applications engineers who will tell you the best product to use for whatever you want to do.

At the very least, they’ll give you a list of questions you need to ask yourself and answer to determine what is meant by “best”.

For example, what is important? Durability? Grip? Ease of casting? Flavor?

Do NOT be the tiniest bit afraid of calling them! They live for these calls, don’t deprive them.
