More Flexiability w/ This years award

Acceptable submission formats are: CD-rom, computer diskette, VHS videotape, essay, or scrapbook. Audio cassettes are not an acceptable submission format.
Please also note that, in future years, FIRST is moving in the direction of specifying that all Chairman Award submissions be in an electronic format.

Its seem that last years problems, are solved in a way to deliver content. However they have not specified with kind of formats are acceptable. I think that they should include

  1. QuickTime–(.mov, .avi, .mpg, etc)
  2. Flash
  3. Shockwave
  4. HTML–Any web language basically
  5. PHP
  6. PowerPoint–The entire office suite to be more precise

Any more?

something was brought up about a DVD rewrited video rather than a VHS videotape. Does anything say that we can’t send one of those in???

YOU HAVE A DVD BURNER!!!

DVD Burners are only on high end Power Mac G4 and G5 and one type of Compaq computer in the DVD-R format. Currently it is only CD-ROM or diskette format. However if you ask FIRST maybe they will allow you to use the DVD-R format. Alternatively and more practically you can create a video CD which can hold about 15 minutes of good quality video. Look at my Video CD thread for further details.

But what I am curious to see what computer formats are acceptal. Since there are a numiourios ammounts of video, audio, and other documents with different formats.

Was FIRST trying to make us use our computer knowledge and twist things so more people can get their hands into the making of this award?

In my personal opinion I think that it is great they didn't restrict us this year to paper or VHS. Technology is moving forward and so is FIRST in almost every other aspect, but VHS, I'm glad FIRST is realizing they need to broaden the technology we can work with.

Does anyone know who I would ahve to talk to in order to see if we could use DVD's for our Chairman's Award??? I would be more the honored to ask if there is anyone else out ther that is wondering the samething I am?!?

I spelled HAVE wrong!! I’m sorry about the typo.

If you are going with the DVD format. I suggest you start looking at software solutions like idvd (http://www.apple.com/idvd/). Like I said DVD burners are rare on personal computers.

I know that they aren’t an everyday thing that most computers have. It was brought up by one of my fellow team members that is computer inclined that we look into something like that. He has more computer and gadgets for them then I’ll ever know how to use. I was just curious of if that was even a possiblity avaliable to the Chairman’s Award entry…

I think it’s great that FIRST is opening up to digital formats for the Chairman’s award submission. However, in addition to the problem of which formats are acceptible - if your submission requires a certain audio/video codec that IS NOT PRESENT on the computer that FIRST uses to view the submission… then you would be totally screwed :stuck_out_tongue:

Having dealt with problems like this myself on occasion, I’d recommend including any codecs/programs/etc. that are needed to view your submission on the disk, as long as the license that you have for the software allows you to do that. If the program you want to use would require FIRST to buy a copy of the same program in order to view it, I’d recommend looking for something different to use.

My school has the capablity now to burn DVD’s. We were working on all euqitment while I was questioning if we could send them in, but now everything is in place and ready to roll once everyone gets back to school.

I once again ask, does anyone know who I should talk to or call or write with concerns for this question?!?

Thanks…

There was a section on the FIRST website about Chairman’s award guidelines which had contact info, but after the site renovation it’s gone.

All that’s left is:

"Q. What are the new Regional Chairman’s Awards, and when will they be announced?
A. They are new local awards for the 2002 season, and will be judged on the same criteria. There will be a relevant FAQ posted prior to the Kick-Off. "

So I guess we have to wait for the kickoff…

You probably shouldn’t plan on using a dvd format for your submission, since it’s not actually on the list of acceptable formats… but if you can contact FIRST about it, there probably won’t be a problem…dvd players are pretty common now… O_O

… I probably just restated a whole bunch of stuff… but whatever… anyway…

PS: good luck with your submisson!! this is my first FIRST experience… so I’ll probably have a lot of questions…O_O;;;

This topic came up on the Yahoo group. We need to ask you guys to avoid DVD submissions (at least this year) because the judges’ computers won’t support it.
