Most spectacular failures

I will give one first In 2023 at the Arkansas regional In one of our quals our elevator popped our of the bearings blocks and ejected from the robot.

What are some of yours?

This was not my team but at our comp a team’s intake popped off when pivoting so it was thrown off the arm.

2023 Georgian College event, our arm code quite literally disappears (we checked), and then in 2024 we had both a LimeLight and a climber reel pop off the robot (thankfully at different competitions).

Unsure if this counts as spectacular, but in 2023, one side of our robot’s tank drive got inversed in the middle of a match (to this day, I still have no clue how this happened). Our robot was spinning in circles for a bit until our driver figured out that he had to move one joystick forward and one stick backward for the robot to drive straight.

Probably a good thing that our team’s isn’t worse, but I had us using redlines for climbing in Rapid React, and we turned into a smoke machine on the field. This is the biggest failure I can remember for our team, which is maybe a good thing it’s not something crazier.

What we learned: redline motors like to keep spinning, they get sad when they’re stalled.

The ref on the left notices the smoke at 2:08

If it was a spark, it was probably caused by the motor controller losing power and losing it’s invert settings

Our highlights from this year:
In match, when our arm snapped the chain tensioners: https://youtube.com/clip/Ugkx80wfsUDt_GavDkBeynmHbw9r95RnE8Zj?si=REpEDvBHgQQkOisa

and out of match, when auto took out our practice stage: https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/565716154463813652/1228467906757656719/IMG_3671.mov?ex=6724a9a4&is=67235824&hm=7cd957241529db04de7ee55b6bfcfad155eed6c01142e186f62969d64603e56a&

I just imagined the lego breaking noise when the stage went down.

Has anyone mentioned when in 2016 a robot just drove through the field perimeter?

2015, A year that you would think wouldn’t invite contact. And yet, one of our carbon fiber can grabbers got stuck in a recycling bin. Our driver was told “get it off, NOW”. So he spun. Then reversed spin. The carbon fiber snapped and ejected the recyling bin into out of the field. A ref dodged it in the air, and it hit the spectator fence and fell to the floor.
The refs were… not amused.

The. Inaugural 2012 Montreal FRC event had a robot projectile vomit it’s shooter at the scorers table.

So relateable with taking out the stage. During auto writing took it out twice within 10 minutes

@calcmogul you should tell the story of our robot that stabbed an alliance partner bot in 2015.

Edit: include a picture too! Those elevator forks didn’t mess around.

2018 Quarter Finals at GVSU (West MI event). Our robot got snagged on the Scale during auto and stayed there the entire match. Not fun… but kinda funny. Now.
Bonus funny. Watch our drive coach’s reaction on the red side. Tall, white sweatshirt.
