Σ-Motion Team 2658 2020 Robot Showcase: Torpedo

I just wanted to showcase our robot from this year. We ended up ranking 5/58 and getting the quality award at the Del Mar Regional. and felt that what is probably our best robot to date needed a well-deserved video to go along with it.

I didnt think it was legal to hang from the 2nd rung?

We didn’t hang from the second rung. We had two sets of hooks and our lower ones grabbed on so we got farther off the ground while the top ones didn’t touch the top rung.

What were the top ones for?

I think @Toshko_Andreev means that they use the lower hooks when possible (to have more safety from accidentally touching the ground), and only use the higher hooks if the lower hooks can’t reach to where the bar is angled to

Ah that makes sense. it looked like you grabbed both rungs and I was confused

Yup that’s just it. The reasoning was we wanted to be able to still stay off the ground on the lower end of the scale (using low hooks) while also being able to reach the highest position (top hooks). The top hooks are not directly above the bottom ones so when we use the bottom ones the top hooks don’t touch the scale.

You guys have been on an upward trend for years. This is seriously something to be proud of. I love how clean the packaging is, everything looks so well thought out. We didn’t get to play together, but I was in the audience at Del Mar and this robot looked great. I’m looking forward to seeing the next generation of it in 2021!

As someone outside CA, it is always awesome to be able to add teams like this to my watch list at events. Very nice looking robot.

I love it. Very clean looking robot. Do you have any improvements planned for 2021?

Thank you! I saw you guys play at LA North and was eagerly awaiting playing together at San Diego but unfortunately that wasn’t able to happen. Definitely looking forward to playing with you guys next year hopefully!

Some small things can be adjusted (like adding sensors in some spots and fixing a little hitch in our intake-tube hand-off spot) but overall it’s really difficult to make drastic changes without basically redo-ing a mechanism.

We’re looking into the possibility of a complete robot re-do with an entirely different approach (one that will have a more accurate shooter and an ability to pick up multiple balls at once) so as to help us be more efficient in 2021. I’m not sure if we’ll do this 100% but it’s being considered.

Awesome Video! and great robot too. It was really cool to see it preform at Del Mar this year. Good luck on any future events this robot competes in. And again congrats on winning Dean’s List this year!

Thanks so much Eli! It was just as awesome seeing you guys win the regional. Best of luck in college to you!
