Motor Heat Sinks?

Can we fabricate them and use them. We thought about using 775 bane bots for the shooter, but constantly running, they will probably overheat. Anybody know?

If they’re running at speed, I imagine they’d be fine… But why would you run the motors at full speed the whole match?

If it is running a shooter, there is almost no load on it, and it won’t overheat. What you have to worry about is “stalling” the motor, that is, when you apply a load that is more than the motor can turn, and also apply full electric power to the motor. That will burn up it up rather quickly. And the part that burns up is inside, so a heat sink really won’t help. These motors have a cooling fan inside them that turns whenever the motor is turning.

The 550s will overheat and I’ve used the fans from the KoP for additional cooling in the past, which worked well. The 775s appear to have a much larger fan integrated into the case and produce less heat at 12V than the 550s. If you stall them for more than a couple seconds, they will be toast.

We thought about using 2 775’s in shooter, they won’t be stalled, and won’t run for too long, unless we stay in the key, but if we ran them in the drive-train in addition to 2 cims, and we stalled them a lot, how much would heat sinking them help? Should we just use the fans, or both?

Make sure you maintain air passages to the intakes at the front of the motor, or the internal fan won’t move any air. Same holds true for the Fisher Price motors.:slight_smile: :slight_smile:

Heatsinks do very little for motors. The majority of the heat is generated in the armature. the only path for conduction of this heat is through the shafts at either end of the motor. While teams claim they work, I feel they serve more to put the team at ease. In the case of motors with open holes, like the FP motors, there are internal fans to help cool the motors. Keep the holes unobstructed and design for the motor operational speed to be in an efficient part of the curve and the fans will do their job. They can’t cool if they aren’t turning.
