Motor Layout

Our team is testing shooting prototypes and designs and want to get more range. We are using a motor on each side and we’re thinking of either gearing them or adding motors/wheels. How has your team done this?

What motors are you currently using and what is their gearing? 2 motors seems like it should be plenty.

Currently just hot wiring two motors, we are far from an actual bot. Just curious how others had success.

Given hot wiring I’m assuming CIMS? Also, is there any gearing between the motors and whatever is contacting the NOTE?

No, not currently.

If you have access to a spare PDP/PDH, a spark max and a Neo, you can replace your brushed motor that you’re plugging in via battery to a proper electronic system.

From there, you can plug your spark max into a computer with REV hardware client on it and run the motor from there.

We have a setup at the build space, I can edit and add in a photo later.

Of course gearing it using gears/sprockets/pulleys will also help. One of our favourite things to do early on in the season is use old Lexan plates with bearing holes and find pulleys/gears that are a “close-enough” fit.

Yeah if you have access to brushless motors those will let you get more power to your wheels. You could also look at changing wheel size and compression. If you have any pictures of your current set up that would be very helpful

How are you currently pulley/gearing it? That attached picture would be a great help.

What compression have you found works best? We currently have 4 inch compression.

I’m not currently on a team so I haven’t tried anything. I’d recommend designing some variety of set up which will allow you to change between a range of compressions so you can try them and see what works well. You could also look at the various open alliance threads to see if anyone has a design similar to yours.
