Mounting AMT10s to CIMs + gearboxes?

Sorry for what’s probably a really obvious question, but I’m trying to work out how you mount AMT10s (or similar encoder) to a CIM and a gearbox… the output shaft of our gearboxes are larger than the AMT10 sleeves will accommodate (1/2" or 3/8"). Should it maybe be mounted on a parallel axle being turned by the output shaft?

I’m not sure what you mean by mounting the encoder to a CIM and a gearbox. If they are mechanically linked, you only need an encoder on one of them.

Are these custom gearboxes or COTS gearboxes? If they’re COTS, most COTS gearboxes have a built-in encoder mounting point. If it’s a custom gearbox, maybe you can turn down the other end of the output shaft and mount the encoder on the back, like in the Toughbox series of gearboxes from AndyMark.

Try this.

I love that design. We used one a couple years back for testing and ended up going with these encoders on our 2015 robot because of it. We didn’t mount them like this but it’s a cool design.

Thank you, it took quite a few tries to get right. Becomes a little confusing for others when talking about it since another encoder solution came out months later under the name.

Oooooh, that’s awesome.

In response to the other questions, I was trying to figure out how you could mount the encoder to the CIM, and then the gearbox onto that, since the AMT10 just barely accepts the CIM output, and won’t accept a 3/8" or 1/2" shaft, so putting the AMT10 onto the output of the gearbox wasn’t an option.

This custom part here is a great solution!

PM me any question about how to implement this properly.
