can a team have a second, fast boot time router with a physical switch to turn it off for use in pit and while practicing permenantly mounted on the robot?
you can’t use wireless in the pit/practice field. There are no rules prohibiting network switches though. Also nothing prohibiting you from using one at home.
oh, okay. i was unaware that the ban on wireless extended not only to hotspot, but also to standard routers.
I think this is more a rule on when/how you can enable your robot.
From the Event rules:
E303. *Tethered operation outside FIELDS/Practice FIELDS. ROBOTS may only be operated by tether
when outside the FIELD or Practice FIELD.
The rule you’re thinking of is E301.
E301. *No wireless communication. Teams may not set up their own 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax (2.4GHz or
5GHz) wireless communication (e.g. access points or ad-hoc networks) in the venue.
so based of E303 a non bridged router is legal in the practice field, but according to E301 its illegal to have a non-competition configured router running?
E303 states that you may only control your robot via a tether when outside the field or practice field.
E304 states that the only wireless radios/routers allowed are the event provided ones. Not every event (dare I say most events) have practice field radios. Usually it’s only tethering allowed (tether = using an ethernet or USB cable between the robot and driver station).
E301 explicitly bans any and all team setup wireless communication at the event.
I’d recommend reading the event rules further, but as a general rule of thumb, absolutely NO wireless at an event.
I didn’t know there was such a thing as a practice field radio. guess our events fall under ‘most’
The literal only time I have seen practice field radios at an event before, has been worlds. That’s not to say other events don’t offer them, but its definitely far and few between.
FiM State Championships used to have one as well. Most district and regional events won’t have one though.
our state championship didnt even have one, that or i didnt know they did.
