Well there is a high likelyhood that I will be DJing for the FLL tournament my team holds every year, so before school starts and i become too busy what sorts of music would most people like to hear at competitions?
Well, some good high-energy techno will do you a lot of good. (There’s plenty of Creative Commons goodness out there.) Ditto for rock or hip-hop or rap. (I recall Fort Minor releasing a few tracks under CC, and there may well be others.)
Honestly, just about anything will work as long as the energy is there; just make sure the music is squeaky-clean.
If your FLL tournaments are attended/hosted by FRC teams, be sure to play the “classics” - like the aforementioned YMCA, Cotton-Eyed Joe, Cha-Cha Slide, etc. That way your FRC members can teach the FLL members who don’t already know the songs and dances. We’ve had a lot of fun adding the FRC-spirit to the FLL events this way.
Thanks everyone for their input, i have a bunch of techno already just been listening to all of it to weed out the stuff that may have parents trying to lynch me:rolleyes:
I didnt even think to check whitepapers for this so thanks a bunch for that.
I’ve been going and getting tons of Dance classics just because you have to play em
I’m also gonna trip some people up by playing the original “who let the frog out” :D:D
I have attached one of the original “rough drafts” of our music list for our FLL event. Many of these songs were removed and a couple new ones were added.
its not a good idea. I used to do some djing, and some people wont care, but some will. You dont want people thinking they already heard a song. Just play a differant song.
As a mentor who’s getting on in years, I wanted to mention that techno makes me want to die. In small bursts separated by many minutes or hours, it’s tolerable, but please squelch any urge you may have to play that new 47 minute remix of Sandstorm you’ve been carefully crafting in your basement.
I’ll edit this in a bit with a genuine list of good, fun music that’s ecclectic, danceable and upbeat.
Okay, so for reference, music that should be played together is listed in italics. Those with an asterisk should only be played if you’re a bona fide DJ with digital turntables because there are long intros or other parts that need to vanish to keep the energy up.

Thanks for the list, sadly I havent gotten into this enough to have purchased digital turntables but i use a program on my computer to do the same thing so long intros can suddenly disappear.
I use software called Virtual DJ which does a reasonable job of approximating turntables and allowing beatmatching, but it’s tough to do a good job with a wholly digital solution unless you’ve got two soundcards in your computer. Whenever I’ve had an opportunity to DJ, I’ve been able to use my software coupled with a real mixer and record decks, so I’ve been able to queue music on the computer while a real record plays.
I have dual sound cards and my setup allows me to set the music to mono and use the right for out and left for headset queing its really neat i’ve been playing around with it for a while. ahh records, i think i have some of those things somewhere(too bad i dont have a needle for my old turntable)
