MVP Awards?

GregTheGreat’s Post about Team MVP’s got me thinking.

Does your team give out an award for an MVP or something similar?
Team 470 gave out the “Gracious Professionalism” award as it’s highest honor, and [trying not to put it cocky-ish] it went to me. The team mentors decided it an a mentor-only meeting. The trophy is very neat, it’s in my Who-Am-I behind Ypsi High Varsity Letter.

Poll is up top, any discussion below

Yep, our team gives out awards of recognition each year, at our anual spaghetti dinner dance, and some that are a little funny too. I am very proud to be the team troublemaker!!!
It’s late and I just worked 7 and 1/2 hours in grocery store hell, so forgive me for not knowing what we call it.
Oh, and one more thing, we also give out roses to all the team mothers for their support, aww how cute!!! YEA, WHATEVER!

We gave students award trophies for the following:

Oh Great Leader
Designer of the Year
Modeler of the Year
Team Player
Volunteer of the Year
Consider it Done!
Saftey Guy
Dirty Work

There was also two additional awards for the main drivetrain and arm subsystem designers (students). These award titles were named to highlight the best elements of each subsystem: the Speed and Torque Award for the drivetrain and the KISS Award for the arms.

I think our team tries to stay away from giving out MVP awards to the students. I personally think that when a person deserves recognizing they ought to be recognized. That’s the reason I started the MVP thread. If it were up to me, we would currently announce a team selected MVP. I think it is hard with our tam to do that. On top of our Driver Mike, there is so many more on the pit crew, and the people who do the website. It would be hard to name a MVP on many teams. The reason I accredit our Driver, is because of the massive time he spends analyzing every move he makes. He is very exact at his job, and does it well. A formal MVP award from our team should be awarded to him. Good topic sanddrag, I might throw this idea of MVP awards at our coach, and see what he thinks. It sounds like a very good idea.

Good Luck to everyone at the invitationals.

As a side note, Gracious Professionalism wasn’t the only award of the night. All of the drive team got a recognition award, each student got a “mentor funny award” (Comical slogan of an award based on something during the year, mine was “Most Driven Student” for driving over 2000 miles during the build season to work on the bot) and some students gave all the mentors awards (Such as “Perfect Timing” clock to the mentor who’s honeymoon plans conflicted with Nationals).

I’m not going to list them all, but they were pretty neat. By the by, Greg, sanddrag didn’t start the post, I did.

you forgot the other serious awards like Leadership in Control, Team Spirit, and Engineering Inspiration.

I deeply apologize. When I was posting, I must have looked at the wrong name. I am sorry.

Good Luck to everyone at the invitationals.

We didn’t have an MVP. We gave out the ‘Student of the Year’ award which was given out to a student in addition to the awards that each student got. And then the drive team also got special recognition.

We gave out two major awards: The Student Award of Excellence and the George Award for Dedication.

The Student Award went to:
Krystine Thoroughman
Brenton Ellege
Amanda McCord (me! >.<[not trying to be cocky])

and the George Award went to:
George Williams

The student award is unofficially called the Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence. Krystine, Brenton and I are going to be the team leaders/captains next year. We put in many man hours this year, and I feel that we have been justly rewarded.

The George Award is our biggest award of the year. We started it this year because George never missed a building day. That’s important because we always needed a mentor in the shop. He is an awesome guy and I was proud to present it to him!

Hey, someone has go to pick up the ball and run with it. The team won’t run itself. It’s always good when the students have big participation in their team. I think that the more student involvement the better. I wish you’re team the best of luck next year.
