MVRT 115 is sharing all of its offseason CAD files from GrabCAD. I will be periodically updating that folder with all of the models the new and veteran CADers make, with the nicest models being uploaded as rendered photos here. Link to the shared folder.
GrabCAD has an integrated online CAD viewer, so if you doube-click on a part or assembly you can see what it looks like.
Machining drawings are not available for most parts at this time, but I am requiring that they use them in the future for their designs.
Anybody is welcome to copy or use designs at their leisure, although we would like them to give credit. STEP files (or other formats) can be made upon request.
This looks awesome. How did you like GrabCAD? We’re probably going to use it next season with PTC Creo. The biggest thing that draws me in is the special considerations they took for people with slow internet (like our team’s shop). It lets us do peer-to-peer connections and also have a local server so files can be synced “eventually” (as far as I understand it). So it’s fast to share files while we’re at our shop, but also once we get home it’s fast there.
AMAZING. I love GrabCAD. We’ve used Dropbox, SVN, and GrabCAD in three years and GrabCAD is by far the best. No limit on space, it’s free, and it warns you when you’ve changed something that has been changed since you downloaded (so if you or somebody else changes something at the same time, it warns you). It’s easy to revert changes as well. It doesn’t give you as many options as SVN, but for FRC purposes we don’t even need them. And best of all, we avoided having conflicted copies like we had with DropBox.
We didn’t need to. We assigned people subassemblies to work on, and they worked on them. We had frequent enough communication to make it work. If somebody was assigned to work on the elevator carriage and tried to upload, and found that somebody had uploaded before them, they would just overwrite the changes because they would know that they are the person assigned to work on the elevator carriage. It’s possible to lock but I don’t trust the members to have enough forethought or memory to do it right and depend on it.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, it does have one caveat. When you finish uploading or downloading, a green popup appears in teh bottom of the screen that you can only get rid of by going to the GrabCAD Desktop App and getting rid of the notification message there, after which the popup will disappear after a few seconds. It’s annoying when I want to view the time or something.
