Not really tools, but this year we found several heavy chunks of metal in our room. The largest of these chunks had a printed label on it, naming it âThe Negotiator.â
The hacksaw is named Sal, the wire stripper is called Shanaynay and the crimper is named Sheniqua. Sheniqua is the older sister of Shanaynay. AlsoâŠour angle grinder is named Big Red(itâs big and itâs redâŠand dangerous). Friedchickenisha is the jigsaw and our mini hacksaw itâs called Ralph.
449 has a long history naming laptops/printers/most non-robot electronics. We have a laptop named Leo, Elephantine, Asus of Spades, etc. We also have a printer named George, and a vacuum named Louis.
We also have a ball-peen hammer named âBig Pappyâ and a lockjaw plier named âDa boom boomâ
Donât know where it started, but calling the tools by the names we give them is more fun than saying, bring us laptop #2.
Hey, donât forget that all of our boxcutters are Stanleys. Also, I donât think you were around for the best Laptop name - alas, poor Yorick!
Of course, there was also that bizarre tool which no one could identify which saw much (improvised) use in fixing the 2008 AndyMark mecanum wheels (anyone here remember those? Oh boyâŠ), which eventually became known only as âthe fix-y thingy.â
we call our drill the fuego (name of the actual drill) our giant pair of pliers are called the man pliers, and the large steel pipe we use to gain leverage on a vice is called the old man
The only tool in our cart that has a name is the 2 lb sledge âDoomhammer.â In 2009 we were packing up from a demo and in cleaning up we found what we guessed to be another teams packing list, âDoomhammerâ was at the top of the page and a student happened to be putting the sledge away so the name stuck.
At the regional this year one our mechanical students was helping to get a rookie robot through inspection and he said âbe right back, need to get the Sawzall and the Doomhammer from our pit to finish this,â the look on the faces of the rookie team members were priceless.
Also, while itâs not a tool, we do have the âBFCâ (pretty sure people here are smart enough to figure that one out) in the back room for which we have never found a use. I believe it was originally purchased back in 2008 to actuate an arm that never went on the robot (it was supplanted by a far-superior scissor lift).
Our Harbor Freight MultiMeter is the âOne Time Useâ or the âWell, Thereâs Something Detectorâ
Our Hammer is the âPersuaderâ
We also have several âSpecial Toolsâ including a T-Handle with some 3/8 threaded rod on a block, though nobody is sure what it is for, and a bent flat-head screwdriver for the WAGO connectors on the PD board
Oh, and my personal favorite, we have the âBig Wrench/Big Screwdriverâ for anything bigger than reasonable.
