My team is having a ridiculously difficult time trying to name our robot something clever and game related, does anybody have any ideas?
Maybe something Egyptian or Aztec related with the pyramids and all
When we name our robot it either has to be with an X or cat related (X-Cats get it?) and combining it with this yearâs theme (Our theme this year is the FIRST Pyramid of Success) or the game helps.
This year we voted on SphinX as our robot name.
Previous Names:
2012 Exxio Auditonimous
2011 LegeXXy
2010 X-Force
2009 Apollo X
2008 Xtender
2007 X Static
2006 XoX-Cat
2005 X-WhAAAt?!?
2004 Project X
2003 X tinguisher
2002 Xcaliper
I would wait to have something come out naturally within your team. Maybe a certain part of the robot will define what you think of it. Our team name (PVC Pirates) came from our robot in 2004. Another one of our robots was named after a character from a show. Someone should come up with something good naturally after a while.
We name our robot around the 4th week of the season, once there is something sitting on the table that looks like a robot. First, people write possible names on the white board for the morning of the session (we do this on a Saturday) and then by mid afternoon we have a list of about 100 things. We go through the list with everyone and require a number of seconds to let the name past the initial stage. After the preliminary ballot, we usually vote and if it is a close vote, eliminate all but the top two (or three if they are even) options then hold a second vote. That is then our robot name.
For reference, we ended up naming our 2012 robot Dr. Swoosh for no reason other than it was a cool name, 2011 Duck 'N Cover because it looked like a duck, 2010 The Commander after a mentor who was leaving the team and 2009 The Hurricane after the shape of itâs helixâŚI could go on.
We always name our robot after a character in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. This year, we are leaning toward The Killer Rabbit (our team mascot), or The Cave Beast of Aaarrrgggghhh. We havenât decided yet and will probably do so around week four.
Thatâs how we do it tooâŚand the names are usually rather strange.

Iâm sure it follows a theme, but I have no idea what that theme could be.
I think ours look something like this over the years.

All 1592 did was just rotate between a boy and a girl name and then just thought of a game right name or just a cool name
2005: Bob(everyone names their first robot Bob)
2006: Molly(the team always listened to Flogging Molly at build meetings)
2007: Larry(named after a mentor)
2008: Xena(lead build mentor really liked the show Xena)
2009: Frank(we couldnât really think of a name)
2010: Josephine(because she looked like a cockroach)
2011: Tony and Rhoady(we nicknamed the main robot Iron Man and the minibot War Machine)
2012: Bonnie(Like Bonnie and Clyde, with Clyde being 801âs robot)
We usually name our robot circa week 5 when the first robot is done. It typically is named something relating to our theme but since we are opting out of a theme this year it will probably be something game related like DISCovery or something
2012-elwood and haynes (city of firsts theme)
2011-mariokat and eXXcelsior (videogame theme +our 20th season hence XX)
2010-batrobile (super hero theme)
2009-jake and elwood (blues brothers theme)
2008-I donât remember
2007-rackstar and starlet (rock and roll theme)
Etc
Well, thereâs the Hammond way: Beast.
Our team, since 2010, has stuck with horse names. Trigger, Shadowfax, and Epona.
My team always comes up with some rather interesting robot names. They are often named after a key part of the robot.
2012: Bowserâs Castle (The turret looked like a toilet seat and the rest of the robot looked like a castle)
2011: Dr. Aughun (The robot looked like a dragon, so dragon, Dr. Agun, Dr. Aughun)
2010: Caspian (Because we could)
2009: Archie GhettoBot III (Originally was named Archie, but then we used a lot of duct tape between competitions to completely change the design 3 times)
I can guess the theme of 2008 and 2009
Like you guys, our robot names are also quite strange.
2009: Bison 1 (Team name was âBionic Bisonâ at the time)
2010: Officially Bison 2, but no one calls it that. I usually call it âPower of Hâ.
2011: Gene (KISS, get it?)
2012: Filibuster (Thanks, Jack.)
We have a strong candidate for our 2013 robot name that we will reveal once weâre certain it makes sense with our design.
Our naming process is pretty straight forward: Buzz (insert year)
This year will be Buzz XVIII
In general though we hope the robot will speak for itself.
Regards, Bryan
I suggested âHumptyâ for ours. Being Knights (Kingâs Men) adds to the appropriateness.
We always name ours âSpooky #â, this year is Spooky 10.
Last year our robot was named Fromage. Actually it was Her Royal Majesty Fromage the Great. Fromage came from one day in the build season when we were weighing her and realized she was way overweight. We agreeâd on swiss cheesing her, and someone said we should call her the swiss name for cheese.
After explaining that there are several official languages in Switzerland, we agreed on Fromage.
This year, the robotâs name is WUERFELVERBINDER, after our Bosch cubic joints. Itâs also our teamâs new favorite word. Another part of our robot is named [EPIC VOICE]THE SPATULA OF DOOOOOM[/EPIC VOICE].
We name ours after people who done a lot to help us or that inspire us. This year ours is named Ingridâs DREAM. Named after Ingrid Tay, a former team mate who graduated from ASU with a 4.0 gpa in mechanical engineering on top of being undocumented. An outstanding feat in itself for a normal student, much less an undocumented one. The DREAM is for the dream act which our team full heartedly supports! Hopeful it will pass in congress and the senate this yearâŚ
2815, being sponsored by the University of South Carolina, has a bit of a tradition of honoring the schoolâs mascot, the gamecock.
2009: Cocked and Loaded
2010: CockADoodleDoo
2011: Cockasaurus Rex
2012: Incocknito
2013: TBD, though contenders have already started circulating around the shop.
(Yes, we know this can get testy as one gets further from South Carolina. However it is also very normal here, appearing no fewer than three times in the fight song. The mentors retain veto privileges, which helps smooth it out.)
WUERFELVERBINDER, WUERFELVERBINDER, WUERFELVERBINDER, WUERFELVERBINDER, WUERFELVERBINDER, WUERFELVERBINDER, WUERFELVERBINDER, WUERFELVERBINDER⌠best name ever.
