Anybody have any news regarding NASA FRC grants for the coming season? I’ve been checking the webpage and haven’t seen it updated yet this year. The grant process opened up around this time last year.
NASA FRC Grant Application Available Soon!
The grant application for NASA sponsorship for the 2010 FIRST Robotics Competition season is just around the corner. It will be available before the end of September. More information will be posted when it is available! Stay tuned.
I’m curious to see what veterans will plan on attending the Utah regional. Should get some attention from some great Midwest teams I hope.
From the website:
NASA FRC Grant Application Available Soon!
The grant application process for NASA sponsorship for the 2010 FIRST Robotics Competition season is scheduled to OPEN on 10/01/09, in conjunction with the opening of FRC initial event registration. NASA’s grant application process will CLOSE on 11/02/09 at midnight Hawaii time. NASA plans to announce their grant winners on 11/18/09.
Please refer to NASA’s website for the latest and greatest information as dates may still be subject to change.
Applications for NASA grants for the 2010 FRC competition season will be available soon. Please keep an eye on the NASA Robotics Alliance Project web page and the FIRST web page for upcoming details.
I would strongly urge ALL teams to check the application criteria. New categories of grants will be available this year that may be of interest to all (not just rookie) teams.

So along these lines…we are a 2nd year team getting ready to apply for our second year. Will we be able to get a second control system in the KOP with this years grant?
I would also like to recommend the white paper Kressly did to help with 2009 NASA grants submissions:

No. My understanding is all veteran teams get the kit sans ~$1500 worth of control system/other components.
“The NASA Sponsorship Grant Application for the 2009-2010 FIRST Robotics Competition Season will be available on 12:01am (EDST) 10/2/2009.”
Anyone else waiting up until midnight to see if NASA posts this years grant info?
YES! With no sponsors so far this year we are hoping for something new out there!!!
I think the “Sustaining Team” grants from NASA are a great action and show of support. These grants are specifically for teams who have lost major corporate funding for 2010 an dmay not survive.
I especially like that these at risk teams must identify what they are doing to recover in the future, but NASA recognizes that they may not be able to sustain themselves in 2010 without some assistance.
Good Luck to everyone who applies!
This new category is a great boost from NASA.
I was talking to a team 2 nights ago who has weathered many hurdles over the years, but just found out they are losing a major sponsor of 7 years-both money and mentors. The even bigger issue is the community may be losing this company.
I’m sure NASA will be receiving some stories.
Chris/Jenny-
I couldn’t agree with you both more. I think this category of offering is a great move toward sustaining and weathering the storm and it shows that NASA’s vision for supporting FIRST (and other similar programs) is about real, lasting impact - not only about new teams.
Thanks NASA. Like Jenny, I too bet you’ll be hearing some amazing stories.
Thanks Chris. As mentioned earlier, we think that the grant program for this year will have something of potential interest for almost every FRC team. We put the “Sustaining Grant” program in place this year to address a specific problem that teams have been telling us about since last winter. Particularly given the FIRST organization’s myopic obsession with growth, we were concerned that no one was going to address assisting the existing struggling teams with finding a way to survive. We know that many long-term teams are concerned about their ability to survive in the current economic environment, and we wanted to do something to help with at least the most dire situations. We hope this will help.

As of last night, it would seem the account [email protected] does not exist. Is this address correct?
Also, I might as well ask my question here. Does the requirement to demonstrate $6000 in existing funding apply to all the grants, and to veteran teams?
Dave can better answer this than I, but each time I’ve completed a NASA grant app in the past all questions that appear to you, you need to answer unless it’s specifically stated that the question doesn’t apply to the type of grant you are applying for. However, I believe those questions’ answer fields were “grayed out” last year when those situations arose. Not sure what it looks like this year though.
Nahhhhhhhhhhhhh
