Interestingly, the closest FRC team to the geographic center of all teams in the NE District is 5491 - Hard Reset. Although if Athol MA ever gets an FRC team, this thread is a great starting point for some team-name inspiration
This is almost just a population map. Looks like Providence is under-represented relative to population, but I’d bet that changes in the next few years.
I am not sure about population of the Cape or possible teams there; they’re not exactly close to anything.
Kinda, but I would think that the population of New England would be really centered around Boston, and this is a bit more spread out than that.
I’m not sure that looking at counties is really the best visualization for this. It might be helpful to look by town, or just density of surrounding area or the like. I’m not sure exactly what, just saying that it might look different with different boundaries.
I’m also curious about locations of the New England volunteer pool. I know that in the extremes, like Pine Tree up north and Waterbury down southwest, it can be hard to find enough volunteers. (And well, it’s not a surprise that Maine has relatively low population density, but the arbitrary lines marking the New England District mean that potential volunteers in New York probably aren’t as aware that they could be helpful in nearby New England events.)
I’ve volunteered at the Waterbury district event every year since 2015 and I haven’t noticed any shortage of volunteers. This doesn’t surprise me, given the concentration of FRC teams in New Haven and Hartford counties.
From 230 and their alumni alone it’s common to see a pit administrator, a referee, a couple queuers, an MC, a scorekeeper, and a few robot inspectors.
An alumna is also the volunteer coordinator at a couple of events.
Relative to state population (and perhaps unsurprisingly) NH has double the number of teams compared to the next highest New England state. Per million: NH 27.9, ME 13.6, CT 12.7, MA 9.9, VT 9.2, RI 5
You know, I think you’re right and I will take back saying that Waterbury has trouble getting volunteers. I think in my mind I was remembering many years ago where it was hard to find some key roles, but over the past years I think that the volunteer pool has grown enough that it isn’t any more of an issue than any other event.
