In the WPILib docs it says we need 2 radios to configure, but we received only one from KoP. How can we configure our new radio without having second one?
I don’t where that information is on first but this is the tutorial that I used to configure my teams.
https://frc-radio.vivid-hosting.net/getting-started/usage/programming-your-radio
Yeah I see that but further down on the page there’s a section for configuring if you only have one and all you have to do it have the number 3 switch on the back flipped and then follow the rest of the instructions. Hope this helps
In my experience, the 2.4ghz band is quite unreliable. We received our radio from 2024 Champs, and when we returned, I was unable to get it working. I could see the radio broadcasting the network, but whenever I connected to it, I was able to establish communication with the DS once, but never after that time (but I could by plugging into the DS port on the radio via ethernet). The time I did get it working, the connection dropped once I was farther than 10 feet away (which was admittedly strange, considering 2.4 is known to have longer range). Once we received the other radio in the KoP, I set up the 6e broadcasting, and that seems to work perfectly. I’ve read a little bit, and it seems like other teams have similar experiences with it. 2.4ghz is a very crowded spectrum, so there’s quite a bit of interference. The best solution is simply to by another one and use the 6e connection IMO. It’s also good to have a backup in general.
There is documentation on VividHosting’s website for setting the Radio up here
Here’s how I set it up with only 1 radio:
- Follow the docs “Programming Your Radio” segment, make sure to read EVERYTHING, we made tons of mistakes that cost us a lot of time.
- Also read the “Practicing At Home” segment here.
- You should be setting this up as a RoboRadio, the WPA Key is used for the RoboRadio to connect to the other Radio, so leave those fields blank.
- Flip DIP Switch 3 to ON, this will make the Radio broadcast the 2.4GHz signal, allowing you to connect to it with your Driver Station.
I strongly suggest getting a second radio if possible.
Did you see the line right above the picture?
Yes, but when I connect radio to robot, I couldn’t see it on the wifi settings (although it says it comes with v1.0.0 already installed). Is this normal?
Are you trying to update firmware / configure the radio or have you already done that? To do that you should be connected via ethernet.
So it’s been stated pretty consistently that using the 2.4Ghz works, however it comes with some trade-offs. (Radio overheating, packet drops, range limitations, etc)
The preferred solution, as the WPI docs indicate, use a second radio:
VH-109 As An Access Point (Recommended)
I have not personally used this adapter, but it says it’s Windows 10 and 11 compatible, and has pretty average reviews (Generic Brand):
I have not used this one either, but it’s a name brand (with name brand prices):
Amazon.com: TP-Link WiFi 6E USB Adapter for Desktop PC - (Archer TXE50UH) AXE3000 Tri-Band Wireless Network Adapter, Ultra-Low Latency, MU-MIMO, OFDMA, Refined Security, WPA3, Supports Windows 11/10 : Electronics
Where did you get this information? The docs I wrote list 3 options and this is not any of them.
This will not work. What leads you to believe this will work (without having a second AP radio)?
While I’m not wrong I did misunderstand the OP questions.
is where I got it from. You still need 2 VH-109’s, which does not help the OP, since he only has 1.
I put a strikethrough on that part of my post.
