Wire a ground cable from your robot’s ground to the ground pin on the digital I/O.

Now have your program read the values on the digital inputs and take appropriate action when exactly one of them is active. Assuming your power to the board is coming from a 20A breaker on the main black breaker panel, it sounds like the wiring you described is correct.
