Need Ideas for Removable Robot Handles

Hey all, I spotted a few teams at the competitions last year who had removable handles on their robots for easier carrying from field to cart and cart to ground etc. Anybody willing to share what their team does if you do use handles? Just looking for something to give our new on-the-fence members something to keep them busy and interested while us older members work out designs and strategies

It might not be the best system but having eye bolts in the frame of the robot and handles with carabiners certainly works. We have tried this in the past, and when you can actually find the handles it works well. We used PVC with a loop of rope through them. I would recommend putting something on your robot cart for the handles to clip to when off the robot so you don’t misplace them like we did.

We’ve had handles on every one of our robots, starting with 2008 (after I hurt my finger loading our 2007 robot into a pickup truck). We did try separate handles and hooks for a year or two, but it was significantly less convenient than having handles built into the robot.

Now is the time to start thinking of where to put handles, in the robot design. Keep them in mind all through the design and build, and you’ll have a very easy to move robot!
