we are using a neo 550 input maxplanetary gearbox, a 20:1. there is a gap when we put the mounting plate and the gearboxes together. we thought that this could be an issue because of the pinion not being flush to the actual motor. is this right, or do we need to fit a spacer in to fill the gap?
You are using gearboxes deigned for regular NEO’s. There are mini gearboxes for Neo 550’s.
Unless I’m missing something, because my other thought would be you are trying to put a plate to mount the motor onto, then mounting the big gearboxes separately.
There is a spacer plate that comes with the kit. MAXPlanetary 550 Input Kit - REV Robotics
You could CNC it out of 1/8 in sheets

A 3D printed spacer would also likely be fine in this application.
