NEO and CIM pinion removal

Hello. My team has many NEOs with Evo pinions on them and CIMs with sport pinions on them, but we need to take the pinions off somehow to use the NEOs for swerve. I was wondering what methods other teams have for this. Thanks in advance.

Arbor press is probably the best bet but if that is not an option then look into some of the solutions that were offered on this thread.

I read this thread thoroughly, none of the options were as simple as I was hoping, but I guess Ill see what I can do with an arbor press. Thanks for your advice. Coming from an FTC background, not having a widely accepted way to remove a gear from a shaft seems crazy.

We successfully removed Sport pinions with this puller (or similar) after making some slight modifications to it using a file.

The Evo pinions cannot be removed with the above because of how close the pinion is to the motor case. It might work if you take the case off. Or maybe a different puller could work… Because of how thin the part with the pulling surface needs to be given small clearance, it probably needs to be steel instead of aluminum if you consider making your own puller.

If you don’t need to reuse the pinion you can use a nut splitter to crack it and then it should slide off.

You’ll also find them at many hardware stores.

The other alternative is to grind one side fairly thin and use a cold chisel to crack it the rest of the way.

In that case, torch it. Will ruin whatever hardness they were brought to, but should fall right off.

Gear pullers are the way. The issue is that most gear pullers are made for the automotive industry and useful dimensions are not commonly published. So you may need to order a few and return the ones that don’t work.

No direct experience but this gear puller might work: https://smile.amazon.com/AUTOBOO-Puller-Battery-Terminal-Remove/dp/B078Z8JLJC

The widely accepted method is to use keyed gears not press on. Also reuse of motors from year to year is not as common in FRC vs FTC.
