New Competition in Atlanta

We have been kicking around the idea of holding an offseason competition near Atlanta along the lines of IRI sometime in July. I wanted see what kind of interest there was out there in CD land. This competition would use a 2004 FIRST field, same robot, rules ,etc. Who wants to come?

Having worked to bring the 2003 Cal Games to my school, I can tell you that you will be very hard pressed to organize a good off season competition in two months. Perhaps holding it later in the summer, or early fall would work much better. By the time you find enough support for the event, there will likely be very little time left to work out all the details.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck!

Cory

Thanks Cory

I have been thinking about delaying until September for this year, but I would eventually like to do it in the summer. I would be interested in what you guys did to prepare, how many volunteers it took, how much lead time did you allow, how did you publicize, how many teams did you attract, what did you charge per team, lots more stuff. Originally we were planning to go to IRI, but then we thought, why not just have one ourselves? We have a great facility here at the school. We would like to turn it into an annual event.

Thanks in advance for any info you can provide, or anyone else out there!

Is this idea kaput?

I’m not speaking for 1293, but the concept of an off-season might fly around here.

(geeze, how did I miss this the first time?)

Currently I do not think an offseason event is a good idea in Georgia. Yes, we might be able to pull one off but majority of the teams attending one would probably be from other states. We have experienced a great boom in teams with the coming of the Peachtree Regional and most recently the Championship, but many of these teams are just building up an infrastructure that would allow them to attend an offseason event. Does this mean that it is a bad idea. No! For one thing the Regional Committee is looking at hosting one next year. I don’t know what has become of Tom Bishop and his plans, but I have not heard anything recently. This area does need an offseason event though. It would be lots of fun.
