New Ri3D team in 2023 (Peoria, IL) - Applications Open

Myself and @13spangs are booting up an Ri3D team in the Peoria area for 2023. Like we previously did with FIRST Capital Ri3D, we are opening applications to FIRSTers interested in being part of an Ri3D team.

Name is TBD, a number of possible locations are being kicked around, but it will for sure be in the Peoria IL area. The team will be well-equipped to handle Ri3D.

We have a number of prior FIRST Capital Ri3D members on board (ex. @Andrew_Lobos, @Connor_McBride, several others), some local talent like @gerthworm, and will be streaming on FIRST Updates Now courtesy of @Tyler_Olds.

General signup link is here. We accept most folks, but if I don’t have a referral I may reach out to you before adding you to our team Discord.

Benefits

  • Provide advice to teams on potential ways that they can accomplish the game challenge
  • One of the craziest and most high-octane experiences you can have in FRC
  • Work with an effective, focused team that will likely have 100+ years of collective FRC experience
  • Get exposure to playing with the game piece and game elements for ~50 hours prior to working with your own team for the next 4 months
  • Mini-vacation to Peoria, IL in January

Additional Details:

  • To participate, you must be 18+ and have graduated high school
  • We will cover lunch and dinner on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, light breakfast on Saturday, and lunch on Tuesday
  • You will be responsible for your own transportation (but we will help connect you to others for carpools)
  • You will be responsible for your own lodging (but we will help connect you to others for hotel room sharing for everyone non-local)
  • Dates: Friday night 1/6/2023 – Tuesday ~5PM 1/10/2023
  • Times: Friday evening TBD, 9AM - 12AM Sat/Sun/Mon, 9AM - ~5PM Tues (with build complete by 12PM)
  • Partial participation is OK, you’ll just need to let me know when you’ll be there.

Post here or PM me if you have questions.

Super excited to do Ri3D again! Designing and building a robot was a ton of fun, but meeting new people and creating long lasting friendships was even better.

The real sell point

Ben prompted us to talk about our Ri3D experiences. I love sharing opinions!

My main involvement with Ri3D in the past has been consuming the content they produce. While I know I won’t be around for 100% of the build, I’m excited to help contribute to this resource this year. I’ve been on the receiving end of countless hours of mentoring by some of the best in the business, and am looking forward to helping give some of that back to the broader community.

Small plug - while the real work happens “in three days”, there’s a lot of prep work that goes into making that time fruitful. A lot of that prep work mirrors what individual teams should be doing in the offseason to set themselves up for success. I’m hopeful we’ll have a few mini-modules out before the build season starts, detailing what we’re doing in advance if teams want to follow along at home. Hint - start ordering your parts and playing with software now.

Definitely high-octane. I was on FIRST Capital 2020. Lots of fun, lots to do, not much sleep. I learned a lot from doing it, and there were so many amazing people there. Love those 15 hour work days. It’s a great thing to be a part of. Definitely takes dedication.

Bumping this thread to let everyone know applications are still open if anyone else is interested in doing Ri3D with us!
