This is just a simple announcement and request for comments and suggestions on 1293’s (D5 Robotic’s) new website design. It’s been in dev for a few months, and it’s just about now I’m done with enough features to call it “v1.0beta”
Of course you can’t see it, but it also has a CMS that uses the Forum’s login system (so there’s only one login for the entire system). The forum is a slightly modded install of punBB (for its simplicity and XHTML strict validating content).
The website as a whole should be 100% XHTML 1.1 and CSS2 compliant. I also went to lengths to make it near exactly the same (for most parts, to the pixel) between all 3 major browsers.
Nice job. I really like the layout and it’s easy to access information. One thing I always want to see is the team’s robots without having to dig through large galleries, and you did this nicely (I’m assuming that you will put pictures up of the old robots). You do all of this while maintaining a nice aesthetic. Great work.
Thanks. The gallery system has a few extra, “features”, as well. Pages can be decimals (and it works as expected) because of the way I handled it, and adding a GET variable “limit” you can set the number of images per page (and this also affects the number of pages, etc., that it displays). I’m working on having something like a “picture of the week”, and probably a picture of each robot on the different pages for them.
This is the second redesign of the website, and I also think it’s the best to date. A new one for each season.
I call shenanigans. This is more like v4 of 1293’s web site; there were two clean-slate designs before the current lineage, done by now-graduates of the team.
Biased as I may be towards my alma mater, I have to say that I think the site is right purdy. Easy to edit, too.
OK, well, I’ll break an even with you – It’s the second redesign I’ve done for the team. Ashwin had a previous design, but I don’t believe it still exists anywhere…
For your viewing pleasure. (Our website was d5robotics.com, but Splicehost did a terrible job on getting the domain transfered, so we lost it. Then we went to d5robotics.org after a short lapse in which we used team1293.be)
