New York State of Mind - 2019 Week 1 Preview

Week 1

New York doesn’t host a competition until Tech Valley next weekend, but there are a number of New York teams heading out of state to try to catch an early interstellar flight to the championship.

Festival de Robotique a Montréal Regional

Three NY teams are heading across the border into Montréal this weekend to one of two regionals this year in Québec.

  • 229 has had one constant the past two seasons, and that’s their remarkably skilled driver. They are returning this season with a cargo ship specialist that scores tons of points, even if it doesn’t pull in extra ranking points.
  • 1511 was notable last year for being a perennial NY contender that decided not to build an elevator. This year they’re rolling in with an elevator that looks like it came straight out of Power Up and four big pistons ready to elevate their machine to the top of the HAB. In addition to having a solid robot, they’re a perennial Chairman’s contender, so watch out, Montreal!
  • 4930 revealed a strange machine, capable of scoring hatches and cargo on multiple levels in unorthodox ways. The most promising part of their machine is the solid level 3 climbing mechanism, and potential to lift a partner, given they’ve been properly prepared. That kind of high-voltage endgame should cause some mayhem in Montreal this weekend.

The Palmetto Regional

  • 263 starts most years by heading out of state for their first event. This year, they’re shaking up South Carolina with another elevator, capable of scoring any level of the rocket and climbing to level 2.
