I have started this thread for questions & comments related to the NYTV Regional Competition on March 16-19th in Troy.
Team 4481 is already excited for the NYTV regional, in a week we will leave the Netherlands to visit New York and compete in the NYC Regional one week later we are competing at NYTV. Good luck to you all with the last preperations for the regional!
We’re planning to make a picture database for the NYTV regional with additional information, so if you already have some nice pictures of your awesome robot feel free to send them: [email protected]. Thnx
Both Moe’s Southwest Grill and Dino BBQ are two places that come to mind that are more of large group atmosphere. Big Apple and Defazios are the two biggest pizza shops in town.
Coming from a volunteer or mentor perspective, you have to hit up Brown’s Brewing Company.
195 took over Dino BBQ for dinner one night while at TVR last year. HIGHLY recommend it. Good food, Good atmosphere, and they can certainly fit a large number of people (IIRC, we brought 80+) .
99% of teams will probably be staying in hotels out in Latham / Albany by the airport, where there is your usual assortment of chain fast casual sit down restaurants and whatnot. I don’t (didn’t) eat out there that much, but there’s a Red Robin, an Uno’s, a Cici’s, Olive Garden, some Chinese buffets, that sort of chain family fare that should work for you guys. Lots of places out there along Wolf Road or route 7 should be fine. Honestly this is probably your best option versus eating in Troy directly.
Troy is full of excellent little places to eat, most of which are not “large group of high school students” friendly, but are all delicious. Muddaddy Flats is a take out / eat in fast casual quesadillary, with a variety of delicious options. They should be big enough for a team or two. Up the hill by the Wal-Mart is Pancho’s, a decent Mexican restaurant great for large groups. Lots of the best restaurants (Brown’s, Bombers [though that just closed down, right?], etc) are also bars, so you probably can’t take kids there. Flying Chicken is a pretty good soul food place, but it’s close enough to a less than desirable neighborhood that I can understand if you’re sketched out by it
I’ll edit a few more places into this post once I remember.
On TVR’s competitiveness:
Wow this regional is tough.
359 is the obvious one to point out, traveling from Hawaii. Also traveling from afar is 4481 with an excellent looking machine. Traveling from Ohio is 48 and from Canada is 3990. All of these away-teams have a track record of success, and I expect them to up the ante for TVR like some of the away teams from last year did.
From the Capital Region, 2791 looks to have their best machine yet, 20 is coming off an Einstein appearance. 5236 has a solid breaching machine, and 4203 has a cool robot. Some other typical contenders from the Capital Region like 3044, 1493, and 250 are probably going to be excellent as well.
From Western NY are 3003, 1551 who usually build solid machines, and 5254, who revealed our prototype machine during Week 3 of build season, and has been working hard ever since.
229 is coming from Northern NY, and they have a history of success, as well as 333 from downstate, who revealed a beautiful machine yesterday at premiere night.
Lastly, we have a crop of rookies, one from China, 5879, and three others, 5881 from Albany, 5943 from Carmel, and 5964 from Voorheesville all coming to us for the first time.
I’m beyond excited for TVR, and I can’t wait to see what the Tech Valley can do against some of these out-of-state powerhouses!
I am interested in seeing how this regional will play out; it seems quite competitive this year.
After reviewing the pit layout, I cannot seem to find team 3003. Did they forget to add their pit?
For the record, 4930 is also coming from WNY to defend our TVR championship from last year!
I’m really looking forward to this event. It’s got everything! I don’t think I can remember attending an event this small that has looked so competitive top-to-bottom. Add onto that the fact that we have teams from Ohio, Massachusetts, Hawaii, Montreal, The Netherlands, and China? What? This is going to be incredible.
For anyone traveling from outside the area (looking at you 4481), go check out the Empire State Plaza in Albany. There’s a ton of cool Dutch architecture as well as some more unusual buildings…
Hey everyone. Who’s excited for a little TVR action this week?! I know I am!
Anyway, I’m going to be your FTAA for the event (make sure to come say hi!) and got myself in a bit of a pickle. I’m coming from the Rochester area. My plans fell through last minute so I don’t currently have a place to stay for the event. If any local teams/mentors/parents/volunteers would be willing to let me couch-surf for a couple days, or if any traveling teams happen to have an empty space in one of your hotel rooms you’d be willing to share, I would be forever grateful. I can get a hotel room on my own, and will if I have to, but I’m trying to minimize the cost of travel this year since I’m doing 6 events.
If you’re able to help in any way, please PM me. I really appreciate it!
Congratulations to 359, 3990, and 4508 for winning the event, 3990 again for winning Engineering Inspiration, and to 229 for winning the Chairman’s Award!
Thank you to 229 for joining 5254 and 20, and thank you to 1665 for coming in clutch in the semifinals when 229’s drivetrain had to unfortunately fail.
Shout outs to:
2791 and 3419, who we were debating picking over 20 on 5254. After weighing a number of scenarios, we ended up selecting 20, but 2791 made our semifinal match-up incredibly hard with 5236, and their third partner, 3624, aka “Magic Bucket”.
Also a big shout-out to 4481, who was byfar the most enthusiastic team at the event, with the most ambitious machine there. Everyone wanted you as their third robot, and your outreach is amazing and well-known. If anyone at TVR deserved a trip to championships for their global outreach, it was your team.
I’m ecstatic that 5254 can attend the world championship once again this year, and I’m also glad that every robot in the finals can attend worlds this year due to the Wildcard system.
I’ll see many of you in a week at the Finger Lakes event!
