Newton vs. Roebling Saved Einstein at Houston

Wow! The last 3 matches with the Newton alliance (118, 1678, 4188, 5892) vs. the Roebling alliance (973, 1011, 2928, 5499) were amazing. Our team was so frustrated with the terrible Einstein experience at Minute Maid that we almost left before Einstein matches ended. Until match 15 of the round robin the crowd was completely dead, but 973’s ability to keep up with the combined fuel scoring of 118 and 1678 created the closest match on Einstein and the loudest reaction from the crowd. The crowd was then gifted another two excitingly close matches to end an otherwise lackluster Einstein.

Congrats to 973, 1011, 2928, 5499 on the amazing win and Thank you 118, 1678, 4188, 5892 on some amazing Einstein matches.

I agree. Those final matches were incredible.

Congratulations to 973, 1011, 2928, and 5499 on a well-deserved victory!

Those playoffs made me wish that the second best team got something from Worlds. Like, 1678 has bee heartbroken so many times, despite consistently being one of the best in the world. If there was a way to reward the teams on Einstein (aside from division blue banner, I mean the 2nd best Einstein team) it would be nice. Like the finalist banner that they have for regionals.

I agree. Very weird for the newton finalists to get a banner and not the Einstein finals. You’d think it’d be other way around.

One data point: FIRST does not award a finalist banner at regionals. Only winner, Chairman’s, and WFFA. If you saw a finalist banner, it’s because the team paid to have it made.

That said, the three Chairman’s Award Finalists at Championship got a banner (Bacon posted a picture yesterday with theirs), and I don’t know what subdivision finalists got, if anything.

Data Point: They used to give out Finalist banners, possibly as recently as 2009. 1676 has one from Palmetto, 2006 or 7, the year we shot foam balls and had to climb a ramp for endgame.

No but they do receive medals and recognition from the crowd.Teams that want banners can order them, but I think the Einstein team that is second place should get some sort of additional recognition above the other Einstein teams (exception being the winners should get the most)

Uh, we haven’t been heartbroken. We’re proud every time we make Einstein and our division banners signify that honor. (Look at the list of multiple World Champs beyond 2–it’s pretty short despite so many great teams.) And we get finalist medals for individuals. Just getting into the Einstein round is enough.

They have never given out finalist banners, but they did allow teams to purchase banners with custom wording.

Maybe heartbroken was the wrong word. I know as a student getting so close to winning but not quite getting there would be difficult once, let alone the number of times some of your student have done that.

Obviously getting to Einstein is something to be proud of, but I don’t think your team has gotten to be as great as it is by being happy about just getting there, your team wants to win it all.

Having never been on your team, I am making some assumptions that your students act and feel the way most people in my experiences do, and a bit more recognition is never a bad thing

This thread went down an interesting path. :yikes:

I agree, crowd was drained but Match 15 helped save the event.
Match 15 was definitely the best match of the Newton vs Roebling series, both alliances reached their peak.

Roebling needed to score a lot in Match 15 to even make it to the finals.

What were the 175 penalty points for?

Robot died in the opposing loading zone.

Actually, 4188 was disabled when struck by a blue robot, then pushed by an opponent into the key after it was disabled. The impact caused 4188 to do a radio reboot. The 175 points were racked up after the disabled robot was pushed into the key.

The Carver vs. Newton and Carver vs. Roebling matches were pretty epic as well. While I think there are some clear downsides to the round robin format, being able to see every combination of Einstein alliances leads to a bunch of great matches.
