NI Update Service - do it?, or not?

NOTE: I understand that after the LabVIEW install, I have updates to do (http://joule.ni.com/nidu/cds/view/p/id/2261). The question below applies to the update service choice that can be checked when doing the initial LabVIEW install.

All,
I’m trying to keep our LabVIEW programming laptops consistent. Normally, I patch (i.e. update) my software without concern. LabVIEW has an “update service” and last year, checks for updates always came up empty.

This year, I’m seeing at least two updates:

  • Driver Station: NI-RIO Patch for using sbRIO-9632/9642 with LabVIEW and 4.0
  • Run-Time Software: NI Security Advisory 5Q5FJ4QW - Local privilege escalation vulnerability

QUESTION: I can’t find any explicit FIRST directives to use the NI Update Service so I’m wondering (a) is there any explicit FIRST directions on using this service or not and (b) are any of you doing them?

I appreciate any feedback

I’m not an official word from FIRST, but I suspect that it doesn’t matter either way. You are not using the sb-RIO product, so the first should have no impact, and I have no details on the second, but it generally means that someone internal was able to find a better way to secure some runtime. Again, it probably doesn’t have much impact since LV isn’t typically a target for malicious SW.
