To all team contacts -
I’d like to use this forum to thank all of you for your hard work this year
making the program a success. I’d also like to take this opportunity to
recognize and applaud the FIRST staff that made the competition work. To
both groups, thousands of lives have been touched and many have been
transformed.
As some of you know, I have been serving as the Director of the Robtoics
Competition while on sabbatical from my teaching position at the U.S. Coast
Guard Academy. Having been involved with FIRST on a team basis since '93,
I welcomed the chance to help the program in a different area. Since my
sabbatical ends this summer (August 15), FIRST needs to hire a permanent
replacement for my position.
I feel very strong that the person who takes on this position must have
FIRST experience as a team leader. I’ve inlcuded a job description below
and ask that you distribute this to anyone that you may think qualifies and
is interested. Even if a person does not satisfy each criteria, I
encourage them to submit an application.
Thanks again for your hard work and please contact me if you would like any
additional information on the position - Vince

FIRST Robotics Competition
National Program Director
The FIRST Robotics Competition National Program Director is responsible for
all aspects of a nation-wide robotics competition that partners industry
with youth to help secure this nation’s technical literacy. The Director is
responsible for developing and executing a strategic plan to make this
partnership program available throughout the United States. The Director
leads a staff that services nearly 300 business-youth teams from across the
U.S. and directs robotics competitions at sites across the country.
Responsibilities include developing plans to expand the current reach of
the competition, securing and applying the necessary engineering, personnel
and financial resources to make the competitions successful, rewarding and
sustainable, and evaluating program outcomes. The Director reports to the
Executive Director of the FIRST Foundation and is one of the senior
managers that develop the Foundation’s policy, standards and strategy.
At least five years worth of team oriented management experience is highly
desirable, preferably in the areas of strategic planning and operations.
Excellent management and communication skills, combined with a
multidisciplinary engineering background are beneficial. The ability to
lead a team and effectively work with the leaders from a broad spectrum of
national engineering, research, manufacturing, computer, and communication
businesses, as well as education and government leaders is necessary. The
candidate must be familiar with working with volunteer organizations and
for profit businesses, and have a documented history of guiding design
ideas into reality.
