Today I came back from a sucessful hunt at the dewalt service center. I have all the pieces I need to modify and make a gearbox for a fisher price.
In the writeup it does not state how to modify the pinion.
I have two broken dewalt motors with the correct pinions on them. Could anyone tell me how to go about getting the pinion off and then modifiying it to work with the fisher price motor?
You can use a gear puller similar to this: http://www.readyheli.com/Universal_Pinion_Puller_p/acc650.htm
Or
Use and arbor press, support the bottom of the pinion and the rest of the motor unsupported. Press the gear and shaft flush. Use a pin to push the shaft the rest of the way out.
The white paper says the following:
3. Press the modified pinion gear (.125 inch +0.0000" -0.0005 " hole) on the shaft. The distance from the
top of the pinion gear to the front of the motor case is .072 inches, measured with the motor shaft biased
towards the motor. Be careful not to bend this motor shaft. Make sure the shaft is square as you press on
the gear.
The are saying to bore the hole out to .125" no bigger and up to .0005" smaller. Good luck.
I am no longer at school with the piece so I can’t be certain. But, I think the pinion already had a hole larger than .125.
you need to sacrifice another dewalt tranny for a pinion, the pinions from the first stage (the longer ones I think) fit on the FP and will fit in the center of a non-scavengened trans. I think, if it’s not the pinion from the first stage it’s the second one.
if you read dr. joes’ nbd paper it will show you which stage to steal the pinion from.
good luck!
You will get the pinion from planet 2 stage. I think there should be 4 gears in stage 2.
I got the pinion off of the dewalt motor that came with the broken drill. Do the gears in from the second stage have a smaller bore? The bore from the pinion off of the orignal motor is closer to 1/4".
Its was 2004 since the last time that I used the Dewalt, but memory tells me that we used one of gears from the planetary stage 2 and bored the center hole to press onto the FP shaft. Not sure about the Dewalt motor pinion. It may be the right size hole. Can’t say for sure.
I can’t say from memory which stage, but the NBD paper definitely recommends using a planet from one transmission as the sun for the 1st stage.

From experience I can attest that the pinion you will need comes from the second stage.
We tried endlessly to use one from the first stage to no avail. It simply will not work. We had to remove the newly installed first stage pinion and replace it with one from the second stage, then the motor and trans went together quite easily.
