NURC National Underwater Robotics Challenge

You can watch the National Underwater Robotics Challenge tonight at 8pm AZ time. here https://lnkd.in/gB3zwe2V
We are coming back from a thee year break. This is the underwater game that FIRST talks about!
If you saw the movie Spare Parts this competition runs like that! Hope to see you on the stream!

Here is NURC website. https://coachfredi.wixsite.com/nurc We have 4 teams this year. We were up to 24 before, looking to forward to getting back to that number soon!

Here is the theme this year
Mission Theme:
Dr. Irene Pinto was brushing clean the surface of a carving embedded in the canyon
wall, removing eons of sediment that coated all the nooks and crannies to reveal the familiar, yet
undeciphered ancient writing. Her heart was beating so hard she thought she might fall off the
narrow, 200 foot cliff that held her above the floor of the Grand Canyon. She imagined her
father. He would have been thrilled and proud of her discovery! The world, she believed, was
about to change.
When Irene was a little girl, her father would take her on archeological digs and show her
how to unearth, without destroying, the precious artifacts. While she thought the world of her
father, she was aware that he was largely considered by the archeological community to be a
fool, wasting his whole career chasing a theory that could never be proven true or false.
Early in his career, Irene’s father Wilbur found a 7000 year old clay tablet at a dig site in
Canyon de Chelly, displaying two distinct written languages. One of the languages was
Sumarian and the other was unknown. He believed the tablet must be a primer but he lacked
another sample of the unknown language to test his theory. The archeology world generally
dismissed his finding yet lacked an adequate explanation as to how an article of Sumarian origin
could end up in the American Southwest and predate the ancient Indian dwelling site where it
was found. Wilbur Pinto soon learned that Chief Joseph led the Nez Perce tribe through this
area, pursued by the U.S. Army. When finally captured in 1877, Chief Joseph had in his
possession a small clay tablet in his medicine pouch that had Sumarian writing referencing an
ancient city swallowed by the sea. Chief Joseph claimed it was given to him by his ancestors.
This story triggered in Wilbur the memory of a poem from childhood. The poem referred to a
map of a grand city with boundless energy that was eventually swallowed by water. PDF
In 350 B.C., Plato wrote the story of Atlantis, an advanced civilization using a “magical”
source of energy. Experts throughout history have grappled whether the story is fictional or
historical. The time frame of Atlantis’s existence coincides with the date of the tablet that Wilbur
Pinto found. In light of these discoveries - the tablet with two languages, the age of the tablet,
the smaller tablet Chief Joseph had in his possession, Plato’s’ “Island of Atlas”, and the poem
from his childhood - Wilbur became obsessed with the idea that the tablet he found had
Sumarian and Atlantian writing on it!
Wilbur Pinto spent the rest of his life searching the side canyons of the Grand Canyon
looking for the geologic formations described in his childhood poem that would lead him to the
map of the lost city of Atlantis! In 2015, Wilbur’s climbing equipment failed him and he fell to his
death.
His daughter Irene graduated from Arizona State University and took up her father’s
search for the map of Atlantis. She spent 5 years searching the canyons until she found whatshe recognized as the rock formations described in the poem. At just the right angle she could
actually see a mother bear with two sleeping cubs! The poem states, “…the map lies just below
where the mother bear who sleeps with her cubs.” Irene climbed to the ledge where she now
sits uncovering the map her father gave his life for. Filled with emotion, Irene knew she was now
in a position to use the primer and translate the directions to Atlantis with its secret energy
source!
On June 10, 2023, in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, aboard the research ship
Odyssey, Dr. Irene Pinto and your team of underwater roboticists will deploy your ROV to find
and explore the lost city of Atlantis. Clues derived from the poem will guide you in your effort to
locate and retrieve the mystery energy source that powered Atlantis. The U.S. Government in
conjunction with private energy companies are funding Dr. Pinto’s expedition and they are
counting on you and your team to find this critically needed energy source. Good luck!

1hr and half till the show begins! NURC Live! Twitch
We are hoping teams watch this video and check past years videos to hopefully inspire them to actual do a water game! The competition has been run for awhile. It has run from 2007 to 2012 by the team that the movie Spare Parts was based on. https://coachfredi.wixsite.com/nurc/blank-1 Then the Si Se Puede Foundation picked up running it in 2019 with 10 teams. Of course then covid shut it down for several years. Its is now coming back this year. We hope to get to our peak of 25 teams soon from all over the country. The mission run from 8pm at night to simulate depths of the ocean and run until daybreak. Hope you watch tonight and decide to join us in the water next year for the water game. Here is one resource that might help. they are kind of like the Anymark of underwater robotics https://bluerobotics.com/

Good to see NURC back. My daughter and I drove thru the desert from SoCal to Phoenix one year (no AC in the car, mid July) to watch the competition which I seem to remember started very late at night. It was a blast
