No Wood Allowed
Who else has adopted such a theory? 
the only thing we use wood for is mounting our controls/ victors. we spray paint it silver so it looks nicer.
The only wood we had was our crate and for our controller.
On the bot it’s not allowed =)
Wood or any aircraft (fine thread) bolt will get you kicked off the team.
One of our shops we use is an aircraft shop and this really used to be a problem, and it was really a pain to get all the wrong sized nuts off these bolts that incompetent people used, so you just kick 2 kids off the team when they screw up stuff and it fixes the problem. (the kids needed to go anyway, so we just found this a reason, these were the same kids that decided it would be cute to play with the fire extinguishers and make a huge mess, so its not like were really mean or anything)
We just have lexan and metal on our robot (except of the insulations on all the wires and our extender - which are not made of wood, though). There were some pretty bad experiences with particle board during the pre-season (as the name says, it fell into particles). Furthermore, we realized that it was heavy, instable and looked ugly. We have our control circuits attached to a lexan plate and the robot made of extruded aluminum etc. (I like that stuff).
Extruded Aluminum = Mechano for big kids. It’s great!

Calm down, don’t diss wood. The base of 173’s robot is made of plywood and that thing is as sturdy as ever (we have always used a wooden base and it has never been broken as far as I know). Our team considered crossing over to the darkside and replacing our wooden base with 80/20, but it didn’t happen . .
The best part about 80/20, in their little catalogue they even have a picture of a playfort/swingset made all out of extrusion, I mean what gets better than that?

Whats so bad about wood?
Most of 95’s frame this year was half inch plywood. Most of 2000’s bot was also plywood. It’s easy to work with, cheap, and takes hits well (dents up, but doesn’t deform). Best of all, you avoid the boxy look you get from all that 80/20. Hey… looks matter! It’s not perfect for everything, but expect to keep seeing wood bots scooting around.
80/20? Bah! Whats a work session with out the smell of saw dust in the air?

We use wood for one thing, to mount our motor, controls, and everything else. Hey, its lighter than metal and has give.

Yeah, I agree that there are a lot of parts that you better don’t build from wood, but:
It’s great to mount te controls on, it works as a non-conductive surface to mount the rotating light on and, believe it or not, our robots wheels are made from wood:
We got two drive wheels, each 4 inches wide:
Each wheel consists of 8 pieces of 1/2 inch plywood glued and stapled together and the inner 6 pieces only constist of a ring of plywood on the outside (we drilled the inside out for weight-savings). And it works perfectly. We put that nice belting on the wheels and we got a really nice amount of traction, definitely more traction than any robot with 8 skyway wheelchair wheels.
