This just a curiosity of mine: (1)How are your drivers selected for OCCRA, (2) who selects them, (3) what are your requirements, and (4) do you practice and how often?
During FIRST and OCCRA 469 had a selected set of drivers, one coach, and one human player. This year as the placebo, we are rotating through people who volunteer to try out. Our only requirements are full knowledge of the rules and a bit of pre-competition practice. Practice is not regular andt is an as-needed event. I’m just wondering what other teams do for driving during OCCRA.

Two of us were selected by our coach based on skill level/experience driving (I’d operated last year during OCCRA and my co-driver drove the 2004 Juggernaut robot) and on the amount of the time we spent working on the robot. Our coach keeps track of this time, so I guess that would be the requirement. Although we would like to practice, we’re usually occupied with making changes and improvements to the robot… the most practice I’ve gotten this year has probably just been driving during Open House.
Team 27’s drivers are chosen by the adult advisors on the team. They take into account activeness in the team, understanding of the game, willingness to listen to directions and take criticism, but most of all experience. We have a very large team this year, but still didn’t finish the robot early enough to get any drive practice, so our drivers were chosen based on who drove or has participated in either FIRST or OCCRA in years past. We have a week and a half before the finals, which are being spent strictly on driving and fixing any little flaws that may exist in our robots design. We should be firing on all cylinders come the county tournament. See you all then.
we choose simply by who can drive best at practice, then at competitions when they start
Austin, how did you guys do this year? Also, email me. I lost your address. PMG
