Anyway sometimes stuff happens that you just think to yourself, “how did that happen” or “wow thats lucky”.
Anyway there are two stories that I find really funny.
My robotics club is having a party so we brought the robot out of the technology room to drive it. We are bringing it back into the room. There is a custodian cleaning up. So we put the robot back and the custodian says,“Ahh so you are in robotics club. I know how to do CNC maching.” Then he talks about how everything is made by machines now and what CNC stands for. My friend goes,“Come on by next year and help us.” I wonder how my school hires its employees. My math teacher has a degree in aeronautical engineering and my physics teacher has a degree in mining engineering.
2)I was looking in my telephone book for electronics and hobby stores. I wondered if there was a listing for robotics and guess what there is. I thought to myself,“Ooo possible sponsor. How lucky?”
In 1999 one of the Technokats goes in the room, and for no reason at all started throwing Kleenexes all over the room. One of them stuck and he thought it must be a sign, so he left it up. Then we won every match until the finals where we lost and finished 2nd in the nation. When we got back the Kleenex was no where to be found.

I never forgot learning that my favorite mentor in Science Applications International Corporation had a degree in Japanese History, I think it was. She was head of all records, mailroom, document management…
She’s one of the reasons I insist with my kids they get a degree, cuz I learned that having a degree in anything gets you about $10,000 more a year than someone without a degree.

Since Northrop bought TRW (who had been our major corporate sponsor and hadn’t wanted us to get any other corporate sponsors ), late last year they had declined to follow thru on promises to “leave things as is” and sponsor our team.
I shared in another thread that I couldn’t find a videographer from our school to go to Phoenix regional, my daughter’s friend from another school volunteered. Then our school said parents had to accompany any out of school guests. So the parent came last minute. They bought our team a vcr, donated it to the team, hooked it up the feed, the student and his parent were wonderful, the kids thought the parent was “cool”.
The student was so impressed with the FIRST program and our team he asked to join the team and edit the videos.
I found out weeks later the dad was VP of Northrop Credit Union. He was doing us a favor and it hadn’t occurred to me to ask where he worked.
and suddenly Northrop decided to sponsor us after all.
Down in Disney, all of the monorail support poles are numbered, and the pole numbered 177 is just outside the entrance to Epcot. So we decided to make it a tradition to take a team picture there every year.

…and a college drop-out can make >$1,000,000 more than a person with a PhD.
Education doesn’t have anything to do with how much money a person can make. Experience, Perseverence, and Character do.

chuckle My 28yo son, a high school dropout, makes $75,000 a year. Doesn’t keep me from encouraging my current teens that their chances are better with a degree. Education can have something to do with how much money a person can make.
However, I do agree that perseverance and character have much more to do with success than high intelligence. I believe my daughters will have much more success than someone else they and I know .

**an education is nothing but knowledge. The more knowledge you have, the more you can do, the more successful you can be in whatever you pursue.

small disagreement
I’ve been told the reason “any” college degree will help you get paid more is the experience of college teaches you much more about process than knowledge.
This year our team wore red hard hats. Those of you at nats saw them. any way most of us didn’t really like them and a couple people refused to wear them. But I was a driver and I represented my team to my best ability. ( I wore the hat!) Anywho I was standing in our pit looking for some screw or somethan’ when all of a sudden it felt like someone had thrown a base ball at my head. turning around ready to kill someone our neighbors started saying sorry to me!? I was confused, what had happened? well it turns out their 20 some foot tall flagpole had fell over and the very end of it hit me in the hard hat!! any one out there who know physics knows I would have been konked pretty hard if it were not for the hard hat. Who’d a thunk that an actual hard hat would be in use at a robotics competition?
one of the things you prove when you obtain a college degree is that you are able to work on your own, with nobody looking over your shoulder all day long.
If you can make it through college, and do well enough to get that sheepskin - then an employer knows you can perform tasks on your own, and function independantly.
Thats why you can earn more money with a degree - to some extend you have proven your abilities.
luck comes in all manner of things for our team it came i a lucky zip tie. It started when i found a zip tie on the first qualifying day at nationals and put it in my headband. immeadiatly following getting the tie wrap my team got over 270 points in the match. And the luck just continued to flow all the way through the finals.
I don’t know about all of you but i love zip ties:D
Well, the day before the Rutgers Competition, I sold a bandpass box at work - Model #BB-102. I must have seen that number come up like 20 times at work and school all week long. And whats with all those 102 truck signs on the highway? I want to steal one so bad.
My run of odd luck came at Chicago this year. We had left for the compitition Monday morning to avoid driving through the middle of the night. We got there about 5:00 p.m. Since we had nothing to do, we hung out at a beach near the art center of Northwestern University. We found a tennis ball there and threw it around between two groups of us guys (the girls had a premonition about what would happen later). One throw went high and I jumped up to try and catch it. The ball went straight past my glasses and hit me in the eye. The next day, our practices went great and nothing went wrong. The next morning, rolling out of bed, I hit my head on the nightstand. We won every match that day. I was not injured any further during the day. That saturday we lost every match. A lesson: I have to accidentally hit my head with something every competition day for good luck.
i have often heard the story told on my team about our 2001 bot.
they were having problems getting the robot to function properly (maybe drive train woe, i dunno, i wasn’t on the team yet). when they looked, they noticed they had the red lens on the light. someone said “hey, red is for stop, green is for go. let’s put the green light on.” after this switch out, the robot moved.
we still joke about pulling out the old green lens and setting it atop the new light:)
