Have official scorers ever been used for shooter games, or have they only been there for pick and place games?
pick and place iirc? or when the automatic scoring of the shooting pieces became janky…
2015, 2019, 2023 were the years Official Scorers have been a volunteer role for the whole season at least since 2012, when I started refereeing. (There was a lot of commentary in 2014 about the referees having too much to do in the match to also be scoring, resulting in many missed scores. I personally believe is part of why the role was introduced, albeit it in 2015 it was a bit pointless. 2013 had field reset help verify frisbee counts, as did 2024 for the amps, but these were additions after the seasons started.)
Pretty much always pick and place.
Not that there hasn’t been some minor suggesting that they can also do auto and endgame, but generally if it’s a pick-and-place there will be an Official Scorer (AKA Real-Time Scorer) and if it’s not pick-and-place there probably won’t be.
Earlier than that
- 2007 used scorers for the rings.
- 2009 (the game that shall not be named) used official scorers, but they were more like official estimators.
- I think LogoMotion also used scorers in 2011.
All pick and place.
Until we went out and hand counted after the match.
Source: still have my scorer shirt from IRI that year.
So either it’s a pick and place, OR they’ve finally learned their lesson about shooter games and are going to have them from the start, rather than after 4 weeks of janky sensors that lead to hundreds of replayed matches.
In the docs it says what are the Responsibilities of the Official Scorer:
Once each match is complete, the Official Scorer must do a final count of game pieces
Therefore, it must be that the game pieces can be counted at T=0.
As long as the game pieces are not recycled back onto the field, then that doesn’t rule out a shooting game.
Off the top of my head, 2024, 2017, and I can’t remember about 2020/21
Yeah
I didn’t rule out a shooting game, just mentioned it cant be a shooting game like 2022…
2017 and 2020 recycled their balls (but it was hard to tell with 2017 given how little they were scored in the first place).
