(1) NO CHARITY BOOK DRIVE THIS YEAR! Instead of books, please consider donating to THE BUSY BOX RESOURCES "PILLOWCASE PROGRAM!

The Busy Box Resources are crisis intervention kits that first responders use when responding to a situation the most innocent of victims – children.
Developed in 2014 as a FLL project for the World Class Engineering Challenge, the Busy Box Resources allow first responders to meet the initial physical,
emotional, and mental needs of children who experience trauma.

The Red Cross was impressed with this project and in 2015 integrated it into their national preparedness program – The Pillowcase Project.
We are collecting items so that we can assemble these crisis intervention kits and donate them to the South Jersey American Red Cross Chapter.

Collecting donations of :

  • plastic rectangular pencil boxes – the kind in Walmart, Target, Staples, etc. that sell for $1

  • Colorful socks and magic towels – Dollar Tree is a good source
*Magic towels are shrink wrapped in small shapes and get large when wet with water

  • Stickers packages

  • collapsible cups

If you have questions about “The Pillowcase Project”, please contact Kathy Simpkins with FRC 316 at [email protected]

(2) MIKE WADE MEMORIAL “DUEL MASTER VOLUNTEER” AWARD (submission form attached)

  • Mike Wade worked for NASA Goddard and single-handedly is responsible for the creation of a number of off-season events on the East Coast. Please honor his memory by submitted the great things that a mentor or volunteer is doing for your team.

  • Teams can submit one nominee who has not yet won the award from their team.

  • Nomination form is attached. Please complete and return NOW! (we will accept nominations until this Friday, Oct 6)

  • Please recognize a worthy volunteer on your team. All submissions will be posted at the event and on the Duel on the Delaware website.

  • The following teams have submitted a nomination so far (if you submitted a nomination via email and are not on this list, please let me know):

(3) CHAIRMANS AWARD WARM-UP PRACTICE 5th year

  • This is not an award per se, but is an opportunity for teams to practice their Chairman’s Award presentation in front of judges

  • Teams interested in participating must do the following:

o Respond by October 6 or earlier to let me know that your team is interested in participating. We will have 6 (six) judging slots. These will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
o Send in a FIRST Chairman’s Award Executive Summary (same as FIRST typically requires for the Chairman’s Award). We expect that teams will just send in the same Executive Summary that they may have used for their Chairman’s Award earlier this year.
o Due date for Chairman’s Award Executive Summary is NOW! (sign-ups), and October 6 (submission)
o Prepare to present your Chairman’s Award to judges at the Duel. Currently, the presentation would be the same as a typical Chairman’s presentation at an official FIRST event. Depending upon the number of teams who are participating, we reserve the right to modify the presentation time. We expect that it will not change.
o Let us know what you need for your presentation (AV, easels, etc.)

  • Our purpose for doing this is to provide teams another opportunity to practice with real judges (we expect to have at least one of the judges be an experienced Chairman’s Award judge) and to provide some helpful feedback for teams as they prepare for the 2016 competition season.
