For us, off-season is a great way to teach rookies and we wanted to attend one but we couldn’t justify going to offseason costwise for this year.
Rah Cha Cha Ruckus is doing pretty well considering the later than usual registration and the significantly increased cost. The next closest off season is MVRC which was cancelled and the Tech Valley Robot Rumble which attracted team in the Capital region and teams east including New England teams. So we get a pretty good amount of teams locally and even some Canadian team (only one so far). We’re aiming for 36 teams and are 13 teams from our goal. We’ll see when school starts up if we fill up.
For what it’s worth, we’re NOT seeing this trend with Beach Blitz.
I expected registration to be down with a new 42-team capacity offseason popping up about 50 miles from us this year, but in fact we’re overcapacity and will be having to waitlist roughly our normal numbers.
Registration did come in at the last minute a little more than usual, but I think this is more of a function of our timeline this year than anything else.
I can’t speak yet on registration numbers but the 3 Florida offseasons from last year all are slated to return.
All 3 announced their dates much later than usual. 2 of them moved to much later in the year and now all 3 are in sequential weekends.
Because of the scheduling we have chosen not to attend the event the furthest from us. The first time we have not attended said event in some capacity in the events history.
We also still have an oddly aged team as we are still recovering from recruitment being almost 0 for the 2021 season. We have a very small senior class so the team decided our efforts would be better focused on educating our students and giving them an extra week to work on a second robot than actually going to compete at an event most of the team would not attend due to the distance. I would not be surprised if many other teams are in the same boat.
As a state we still haven’t recovered to our prepandemic numbers currently sitting at 70 teams compared to the 95 who competed in 2019 (and over 100 planned for 2020) so there are less team available to fill slots at these event than before.
There are plenty of factors that play a part in a potential downtick in offseason attendance I don’t think any 1 answer will fit, especially not everywhere
When will the chosen applicants to your event be announced?
This Monday
SCRIW is also welcoming an interesting mix of North Carolina teams, in that all of them so far are first-timers at SCRIW. We’ve also seen a few new Georgia teams mixed in too, which is less surprising to us since we’re now in the Peachtree District.
We certainly want more teams than we have, but we’re also in a fairly protected spot:
- THOR/Doyenne: All in September on back-to-back weekends
- SCRAP: July
- GRITS: Only other October event in FNC or PCH, but 3 hours away from us in Columbia SC and a 2-day show (which is great, but not everyone’s cup of tea).
So we’re confident that it’llLimelight, an integrated vision coprocessor work out alright.
I agree NE doesn’t seem to have a that problem. I just cked and NERD has 32 teams(29+3second). And 6(4+2) more on the wait list.
