Oklahoma Regional 2024

I kinda miss the event posts that used to happen on a frequent basis, especially for teams that are traveling from a distance. It looks like we have teams from Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Florida, Nebraska, Idaho and Mexico coming to OKC this year!

The event is back in Oklahoma City this year after a 4-year hiatus, so there are an abundance of hotel, food and entertainment options. It’s in a new venue, though: State Fairgrounds (west of downtown) as opposed to the Cox Convention Center, which was turned into a giant film production soundstage for OKC’s budding film industry.

Hotels/Food: there are many options in the Bricktown/Downtown area.

Lot’s of stuff to do downtown (see a list). Sadly, Riversport does not open until later in April, but it is the likely host for the 2028 Olympic Games kayaking events. The OKC Thunder (NBA) are on a road trip this time, so unlike most years you won’t be able to take in a game.

There are AAA baseball games going on that weekend at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, a nice minor league stadium: the OKC Baseball Club (formerly OKC Dodgers) versus the Albuquerque Isotopes.

Visit OKC website has a lot of good information on the “Modern Frontier”

I don’t think that the First Americans Museum is on many travel guides, yet, but it is brand new and I hear it’s very cool.
There is also the The Cowboy (National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum)
The OKC Zoo
The OKC Bombing Memorial and Museum
The Wheeler Ferris Wheel 2024 opening day is April 6 if you want a cool team photo op.

If you have any questions about things to do or places to eat, please post your questions here and I’m sure there will be opinions shared.

There is a chance of severe weather Saturday, especially later in the day.

The Norman National Weather Service is who you want to follow for weather updates.

Edit: If anyone is not experienced with Oklahoma severe weather season and would like to chat about it, stop by the 2718 pit or our spot in the stands. We have a few meteorologists and others who work with severe weather technology as mentors. I know there can be a lot of anxiety about this stuff, but it’s a pretty regular occurrence in Oklahoma in the spring.

Team Tators arrived safely in Oklahoma City last night after an uneventful drive from Boise. Looking forward to playing with all of the teams taking part in the Oklahoma regional! Good luck to all and we’ll see you on the field!

Wow, that must’ve been quite a drive! Welcome to Oklahoma! I hope you enjoy the city for a bit before load-in!

I think you probably beat the Mexican teams for distance traveled, but not sure about 59 from Miami. That would be close.

Team 59 here:

Currently in Chicago Midway in a layover. Should be getting in the city by 4pm cdt!

I’m not exactly sure that beats distance traveled…

Flying from Florida only beats driving 20+ hours if you disassembled your robot and put it in your luggage and reassembled it at the competition :grinning: (which is what 9126 actually did at our last competition). Have a safe rest of your trip!

Since we are only a third-year team and this is the first time the regional is back in OKC in 5 years, we are happy to be local for once! We’re loading the trailer between 5-6pm at the museum and should be over at the fairgrounds shortly after. Traveling is fun but it’s nice to be in our backyard for once. If anyone needs anything please let us know.

Actually we took our robot and pit in a van that is currently driving to OKC right now. Not sure if we’ll be there tonight to setup pit but we’ll see!

Team 6647 just arrived to OKC from Monterrey Mexico after quite a drive
