Omio CNC Issues

Our Omio CNC’s Y axis is not working right now, here are the symptoms we have observed:

  • When we try to run the Y axis, it makes grinding noises and the stepper motors make sounds like they are skipping
  • The Y-axis will only move in one direction regardless of which direction we command it to move, that direction it moves changes randomly
  • When we try to reference the CNC it does not move at all and makes the same noises we have observed but louder

The fact that it randomly reverses makes it sound like one of the poles of that motor isn’t properly connected. If that’s the case, the break could be in the control box, the cable/connectors, or in the motor itself. I’d start be disconnecting the cable at both ends and checking each wire with a multimeter, and then check resistance to each pair of wires on the motor to see if they are the same.

Pro tip: take lots of photos BEFORE you unplug things, especially inside the control box. They’re all a bit different inside (OMIO changes suppliers like crazy), so it helps to have your own reference images.

Yep, we found it when testing with the multi-meter. We recently had to move it, and while we were very careful, looks like one of the wires broke right at the crimp to the connector to the motor. It was still right next to it, so it was sometimes arcing and sending the signal, hence working correctly on occasion, but most times not.

Thanks for the suggestions!
