I have looked through the postings but have not found an answer. Is there something other than the Mach3 software that comes with the Omio CNC machine that works.
My issue with Mach3/4 is that the license is tied to the computer and if something happens we need to repurchase.
The only issue I have with Mach3 is that it needs 32bit Windows 7 to work, which is now an unsupported operating system. We had to scrounge around to find a computer that still had it and would work with it. I’d be happy as a clam with Mach3 if we could just use it on a computer with a more up-to-date operating system.
Just because someone is placing it in a place that you can get to it, doesn’t mean that it is free. We bought our machine directly from Omio and their web site states that it is not licensed.
But we are operating as hobbyists, which means that we may use and install for free without paying for it. If you start making parts on it that you sell you must buy it so as not to breach the terms.
Cut2D Pro has something similar, you still have to buy the software but if its for educational uses you may install the same key on up to 40 computers. Non-educational requires you pay for each computer.
I am not disagreeing with the “hobbyist” aspect of this. My point is that it is unlicensed. I can use it on more than 1 computer than I don’t have as much of a problem. Still is a PITA to get a license if you need to change machines.
A few observations from the Omio website and researching the interweb. Please take it with a grain of salt.
The Omio web site is out of date in places and clearly maintained by people that English is a second language. (It is a Chinese website and their grasp of English is a lot better than my grasp of Chinese. )
Mach3 is a mature product. The fact that it is only fully functional on a obsolete operating system tells you something. Artsoft would prefer you to use Mach4. Mach3 problems with later operating systems is primarily the differences on how the parallel printer port is handled, Parallel printer part is another mature product. Mach3 will run on a 64 bit Win 10 system via USB. It seems to like the older USB versions better. You will get an occasional hiccup with the USB port. That explain why the Omio will occasionally do strange things for no reason.
The version of Mach3 I downloaded from Omio shows that it is licensed. Maybe it is reading something from the Omio hardware. I did not do anything to register it that I recall. Mach3 from Artsoft has a demo mode that will run with some features disabled.
If you do buy a license from Artsoft, Make sure to keep all the details. I here they can be a pain to deal with on these issues.
This kind of node-locked-licensing + computer failure happened to me in the past. The solution was to spoof whatever physical address the program license was looking for. Ethical IMO and checked with the software vendor.
