Pacific Northwest (Portland) Regional - PACNW

There is another thread in here about the match list issue - apperantly the selection algorithm pitches teams with similar numbers against each other, without much shuffling.

Thanks for the data, and I can’t wait to see you (and everyone else) at SVR.

I think because of the matching algorithm the alliance selections will be a lot more interesting this year. A team can be ranked very high if it played an easy team every single match. A good scouting team will be valuable.

So far the matches have mostly been well played (I’m on drive team so I don’t get to watch many matches). I am a little surprised by the number of bots who have a hard time picking up rings. Overall at this point in the game a strong ramp bot is about all that a team needs to win as very few games go over 30 or 60 points from the rack. That might change later with a couple of good scoring bots on the same team in finals.

Penalties have been somewhat nonexistent. Touching controls/throwing rings early has been a big one (and those penalties decided some matches). There was the occasional going into the other teams home zone at the end of the match. Also a few times a ramp would fold out outside of their home zone and exceed 72" by 72". No penalties in any of my matches. Not many penalties for pushing or things like that.

I think the highest scoring match was 128-0 and the highest combined score was 106 to 76 or something like that. The highest score might have changed later in the day.

One of the more interesting things that I have noticed is that all of the top robots are either scoring robots or ramp robots. There is not any really strong robot that has both a ramp and an arm. That really surprised me considering the number of teams with both a ramp and an arm.

I beg to differ. Team 948 (top seed after the first day) is primarily a ring-scoring bot, but also has a ramp. Not the best ramp in the world, but we had bots climb it in a couple of matches.

(The top of the robot is 13" off the ground. We had planned to have a ramp on one side and a “table” on the other side, both drop-down, so we’d be able to hold two robots at 13", but we ended up leaving off the table for weight reasons; instead, we just riveted on a couple of plates to keep robots from rolling off the other side after climbing the ramp. So we can only score 30 bonus points, not 60. We could in theory have a robot climb onto our back and then carry them up another single-robot ramp… at least, our drive team claims that the drive is strong enough for that… but I have a hard time imagining that happening in a real match!)

I think 488 is going to win this one… especially if they end up with a decent scorer.

I have been to busy to take a look at your robot so my generalization might not stand. In general though ramp and arm robots have not faired terribly well with some exceptions.

Let’s not count our chickens before they’ve hatched

Anyone at PNW feel like updating the masses at home about how the alliance selections and later matches go?

according to First’s website they are on the 2nd set of QF matches…

updated at the end of every match!!!

http://www2.usfirst.org/2007comp/events/OR/matchresults.html

I just saw match Semi 1-2 vanish tied 32-32, and then reappear like this:

3:26 PM Semi 1-2 [1778 948 1540] [488 1595 1318] 32-0

What happened? Penalty? Tie-breaker?

There was a tie – the match was originally scored wrong, then corrected to reflect the tie.

The series went to four matches before we lost. 948, 1540 and 1778 lost in the finals to 997, 272, and 1294.

Congratulations, everyone.

Correction, 1087 was the other team on the winning alliance, not 1294.

Great Job Everyone!

See You At Other Regionals or Hopefully Next Year!

Yeah It was 1087 you guys were awesome righting yourselfs for the win in the last final match…
it was an honor to be paired with you and We hope to see you around at nationals

EDIT: DOH! how could I forget the awesome placing power of 272, they were great alliance partners and even fixed their manipulator between matches!!!

My apologies. Congratulations to team 1087 – I don’t know how I could’ve forgotten the fantastic righting move y’all made to take the match.

In match 2 of the finals I was on the losing side (1540, 1778, 948). We were just playing defense and trying to stop the other teams ramp. 1087 flipped over trying to get up a ramp. I thought that we had the match easily. Then somehow they started going up again. In some impossible feat they righted themselves. After the regional talking with my teammates we all agreed that if you can pull that move off you deserve to win. Great job 1087.

Gotta tell you what a roller coaster ride we had at PACNW. Our bot was working great most of the time because of a dedicated pit crew of students and mentors. Our drive team big Mike, human Mike, Crash and the Ice Man did a great job. These folks are all backed up by our scouts & SMEs. This really is a team effort. But all this gets you so far. We had great alliances throughout the prelims. Finally we were very fortunate, delighted, happy, euphoric (ok out of terms for this) to be picked up by 997. A great bunch of passionate robo folks. At LC we often discuss how the second pick is the toughest. What a great pick 1087 turned out to be. The competition was tough but great fun and no one got en eye poked out! So it all good.

I tried to thank everyone I could, if I missed anyone please accept my sincere thanks. After a red eye flight, we are back home safe and sound, but will soon not forget all the great folks we met at PACNW.

Thanks

There is a Flickr Group containing many photos taken from this regional. If you feel like sharing yours create a Flickr account and add your photos to the group. Tag them with “team XXXX” for each robot/team shown and everyone will get to see all the photos.

Look for the team links on the group page to see all the photos of your team.

does anyone have any of the regional on tape or webcasted anywhere

I think that our team has a few of our matches on our team website. That actually won the best website award. I think the thing that was the coolest about it is that a freshman was in charge of the design of the it. Anyways, if you would like to go to

This is team 1891’s website a.k.a. the “Bullbots”

I hope this answers your question.

thanks. does anyone else have any of the matches
