Drive Train Simulator with Current Limiting
by: JesseK

Spreadsheet that provides estimations of sprint times based upon varying gear ratios and other constants. It also includes simulations based upon current limiting and voltage ramping.

This is an updated, slimmed-down version of an old calculator. It puts emphasis on time rather than maximum speed.

Input a target motor, number of motors, gearing, and a wide range of elements about the drive train and electrical system. The output at the bottom shows estimated peak speed, estimated sprint time, minimum system voltage, and maximum voltage while the drive train is at full speed.

It adds an element of current-limiting and voltage ramping to the simulation. This includes a graph which shows what happens to sprint time by adjusting a current limit in software.

The charts show what happens if gearing or current-limiting were adjusted.

Updated based upon a bit of feedback:

  • Fixed an error in the power consumption*]Added a filter to the voltage/current output.]Set default motor & gearbox setup to the KOP drive train]Added samples to show the difference between 6 CIMs and 6 MiniCIMs

Thanks for those who assisted!

I cannot comment about the accuracy or the quality of this simulator, but it does appear to very useful. This year we might be employing a 6-CIM drive train for the first time and I plan on experimenting with 775pros in the off-season. This should be a great resource for us, thank you.
