RS550 To VersaPanetary Alignment Spacers
by: thefro526
Here are the files showing the spacers that were made to aid in the alignment and installation of an RS550 into a VexPro VersaPlanetary Transmission.
After stumbling across some faulty BAG motors, we decided to replace them with RS550’s - which we found are a bit of a pain to install into a VersaPlanetary Transmission without taking a lot of time. To fix this, spacers were made using a 3D Printer to take the ‘hard’ part out of the assembly process.
There are two different styles of spacers, one of which can be made from just about anything and the other is a bit more complicated. Specifically, the spacer that aligns the 550 with the VersaPlanetary mounting plate is nothing more than a washer, 1/8" Thick with an OD of 18.9mm (slip fit into the 19mm hole on the mounting plate) and an ID of 13.1mm (slip fit over the 13mm mounting boss of a 550 motor). The Second spacer is a bit more complicated as it aligns the 550 with the plate and then aligns the mounted 550 assembly to the VersaPlanet Housing. It’s a bit difficult to explain, so I’d suggest just looking at the CAD. The geometry on this guy is a bit weird, so you’ll either invest a bit of time making them or need to find a 3D printer.
All in all, both spacers make the installation/alignment process take about 30 seconds or less instead of some portion of an hour. The 550 To Plate spacer works just fine from what we’ve seen, so if you do not have access to a 3D Printer or other complex machine, but have a lathe/punch/laser etc, I’d go this route.
